Text 1
W: Please tell me how you’d like to spend the day. I’ve got a map here.
M: Well, first I’d like to go swimming. I know a very nice beach. Perhaps we could then go water-skiing; we’ve never tried it. We’re only used to skiing on snow.
Text 2
M:What happened to you? You are so late.
W: The bus I took broke down in front of the hospital, and I had to walk from there.
Text 3
W: John, how did your math exam go?
M: I thought I might have failed, but in fact I came in the top 10 in the class.
Text 4
M: I insist you give my money back.
W: I’m sorry, I can’t do that. The manager isn’t here.
M: Can’t you do something about it?
W: You can have another pair if you don’t mind.
Text 5
W: Have you seen this article about the environment?
M: Yeah, I had a look. Our environment is so fragile. It makes you sad just to think about it.
W: But luckily, the government has decided to take some measures.
Text 6
W: Hi. Could I have a ticket for the next train to Manchester, please?
M: Single or return?
W: Er, single please.
M: The next train is at 12:30 pm, leaving from platform 2.
W: And how much is it?
M: £13.50.
Text 7
M: Have you seen the list of the books for this course?
W: Yes. Mr. Downs expects to have the first five on the list. He is going to discuss them in detail.
M: Are you going to buy them?
W: I don’t know. These books are expensive. And I don’t have a lot of money.
M: How about sharing them with me? Let’s do this. I buy three of them and you buy the other two.
W: I would rather do it this way. We pay fifty-fifty for the books now. And at the end of the course, you can take the books you find more interesting and I will take the ones I like.
M: It’s definitely a better idea.
W: Let’s get the books as soon as possible.
Text 8
W: Hi, Jim. Have you ever done any volunteer work?
M: I’ve thought about it, but I don’t know what I should do. What about you?
W: Well, some people teach homeless children or nurse old people. But I often help clean up the parks and sometimes work in an animal hospital.
M: Don’t you find it a little boring?
W: No. In fact, I even like cleaning.
M: How much time do you spend on it?
W: I used to spend ten hours on it every week, but I don’t do it that much now, about half as much.
M: Could I do volunteer work with you next week?
W: Of course.
Text 9
M: Could I speak to Mary, please?
W: This is Mary speaking. Who is that?
M: This is Bob. Where have you been, Mary? I have been trying to get on to you for the last half hour.
W: I went shopping and have just come back. It is very nice to hear your voice, Bob. I didn’t know you were in New York.
M: I arrived this morning to attend a conference. It just ended. Are you doing anything tonight, Mary?
W: Yes, I am going to meet a client in Washington.
M: But that is terrible! I am only here for one night! I’ll fly to Philadelphia for another meeting tomorrow.
W: I am sorry, Bob. If you had told me you were coming up, I would have kept tonight free.
Text 10
Tom Smith was a writer. He wrote detective stories for magazines. One evening he could not decide on an end for a story. He sat with his typewriter in front of him, but he had no ideas. So he decided to go to the cinema. When he came back, he found that he had had a visitor. Someone had broken into his house. The man had had a drink, smoked several of his cigarettes and had read his story. The visitor left him a note.
"I have read your story and I don’t think much of it. Please read my suggestions and then you can finish it. By the way, I am a thief. I’m not going to steal anything tonight. But if you become a successful writer, I will return."
Tom read the thief’s suggestions. Then he sat down and wrote the rest of the story. He is still not a successful writer, and he is waiting for the thief to return. Before he goes out in the evening, he always leaves a half-finished story by his typewriter.
