Text 1

W: What do you think about my going on a diet?

M: I don’t think dieting is good for our health. It’s much better to eat a balanced diet and take a proper amount of exercise every day!

Text 2

W: White Rose Restaurant. Good afternoon! Can I help you?

M: Yes, I am calling to book a table for six for next Monday.

Text 3

W: Well, what about this two-bedroom apartment? It’s right in the heart of the city, just steps from the underground.

M: Wow, that would be very convenient. How much is the rent?

W: $1,600. But if you share it with another person, that’s only $800 per month.

Text 4

W: Is there anything I can do for you?

M: I have just got separated from my friends. Would you please help me find them?

W: Sure. We will make a broadcast for you. May I have your name, please?

M: Shone. And one of my friends’ name is Jessie.

Text 5

M: Lily, I am terribly sorry about this, but we have to cancel tomorrow’s meeting.

W: Cancel? That just can’t happen!

M: Sorry to say, but nothing can be done. The equipment broke down and can’t be fixed till Friday.

Text 6

W: Your spoken English is pretty good. Please tell me your experience in learning English.

M: Uh, I don’t know what to say. What do you want to know?

W: What’s your method of learning?

M: Let me think a minute. I think I always try to take every chance to practice.

W: What if there is no chance? I mean what if you don’t have a partner?

M: Well, I talk to myself. That is, I play one role first, and then the other.

W: That’s a good idea. You are really creative.

Text 7

M: I’m too tired now. I’ve already been working for 12 hours without a rest!

W: God! Don’t you think the boss should get someone to assist you?

M: Yes, he was supposed to, but so far nobody’s turned up, and I have to do the work alone. This is the first break I’ve had all day.

W: He is really running you into the ground. Why don’t you ask for some time off? You could take a long weekend break and have a good rest.

M: I’m afraid I can’t before I finish this project.

W: You’d better pay more attention to your health.

M: I will, thanks for your concern.

W: You’re welcome.

Text 8

W: Dad, you keep talking about family in New Zealand. Who are they?

M: Well, they’re your uncle Bill, his wife and their daughters, Sarah and Jane.

W: Is Uncle Bill your brother?

M: No, your uncle Jack is my brother, and Bill is my brother-in-law, your mom’s brother.

W: So his two daughters are my cousins?

M: That’s right. Sarah is your uncle Bill’s older daughter. When she was young, Bill’s first wife, Ruth from the USA, died. Three years later Bill married again.

W: So Uncle Bill’s present wife is Jane’s mother but not Sarah’s mother, right?

M: Yes. She is Sarah’s stepmother.

W: And when are they coming to visit us?

M: They want to travel to Europe next year, and will visit us at the same time.

Text 9

M: I am considering going for the new job that was posted in the newspaper yesterday.

W: Are you certain it’s what you want to do?

M: It may not be the best choice for me, but I am considering it.

W: Why do you think this would be a good move for you?

M: I believe that there is no bigger chance to allow me to move up than this job, but it might be a little boring for me.

W: Remember everything in the world has two sides. There is no exception to making a career change.

M: Also, the matter of pay is a problem worrying me.

W: I think the slight pay decrease might be worth it. The benefits are much better.

M: Yes, sometimes giving up a little to move forward is the best choice.

W: I think you should definitely apply for the position.

Text 10

3-year-old Michael, who went missing from his home for more than five hours, was reunited with his parents on Monday afternoon after a middle school student found him inside an unoccupied home in his neighborhood.

Police and neighbors began searching for Michael after he was reported missing on Monday morning from a home in Greenwood. The boy’s father, who was watching him, took a nap. When the father woke up, he couldn’t find his son. The boy was last seen around 9:30 a.m. Safety officials arranged for a dive team to search a nearby river. The neighbors worked in teams and walked through the streets of the district in an effort to bring the missing child home safely. In addition to Greenwood police and fire officials, a highly trained search and rescue team helped with the search. However, it was the young middle school student who discovered Michael, who was alone and frightened inside the student’s home. Police said the boy walked to the nearby home and entered through an unlocked door.
