Text 1

W: How many hours’ sleep do you normally get, Allan?

M: I usually sleep for eight and a half hours in the evening and take a short sleep for one hour after lunch.

Text 2

W: Adam’s mother makes him so nervous every time he takes her to the store.

M: You are not kidding. She will tell him where to turn, how fast to go and which road to take. She is such a "back-seat driver".

Text 3

M: This is Jim White speaking. May I speak to Mr. Smith?

W: He is not in. Would you care to speak to Mr. Brown? He is taking Mr. Smith’s course when he is out.

Text 4

W: You look down. What happened?

M: I can’t go to the US tonight. I have to stay here for a meeting with my boss tomorrow.

W: Never mind. You can come to my party tonight.

Text 5

M: Hi, Judy. Do you want to play tennis after school at about 4:30?

W: That would be fun, but I've got a swimming lesson. It’s usually at 5:15, but it’s half an hour earlier this afternoon.

Text 6

W: Michael, where are you from?

M: I was born in Beijing. Later I went to college in Nanjing, but I work in Shanghai now. How about you?

W: I’m from Scotland.

M: What’s it like?

W: The weather is pretty cold there in winter and summer in Scotland is pretty wet and cool.

M: Beijing is very cold in winter too, and it’s rather dry. However, I like winter best. Summer is just too hot!

Text 7

W: Jeff, what about going shopping this weekend?

M: Do you want to buy something again? You just bought two new dresses last week.

W: That’s true, but we will get our salary tomorrow. So we should celebrate it and enjoy ourselves. We’ve eaten Italian food before but it was just so-so. How about trying Korean food this time?

M: That sounds great. But don’t forget to pay for the rent and food.

W: So what?

M: I mean you should have some money for a rainy day.

W: But in my opinion, we work very hard because we want to enjoy a high-quality life.

Text 8

M: Kate, you went to Japan once, didn’t you?

W: Yes. When I was 15, I studied in Tokyo for just two weeks as an exchange student.

M: Did you go there alone or with your parents?

W: I went with a group of seven students and we were from the same school.

M: What do you think of living with a Japanese family?

W: It was very interesting. The family was really kind to me and the customs were so different.

M: What is the Japanese lifestyle like?

W: The traditional way is that the mother is a housewife. She will make breakfast for the whole family. When the kids come back home, she makes dinner for them. And finally the father gets home very late after work, and has his dinner. Everybody just gets their own dinner. Everyone is independent.

M: That’s a lot different.

Text 9

M: Mrs. Williams, have you been swimming long?

W: No, not long at all. I started originally to get fit again after my youngest child was born.

M: So when did you start taking it seriously?

W: About three years ago. I joined the swimming club then, which really made me work at it.

M: And now, how often do you practise?

W: Every day. But I can't go at a regular time, as I have to make arrangements for the children to be looked after.

M: And what does your husband think of it?

W: Oh, he thinks it’s wonderful. He’s pleased that I’ve got something more interesting to think about than housework, and he’s proud of me for getting into the country team and winning prizes.

M: Well, I hope there’ll be more today. Thank you very much, Mrs. Williams.

If you have trouble finding the best hotel for your trip to London, I’m sure this passage will help you a lot.

The Swan Hotel is a pretty small hotel. The good thing about it is that it’s not far from the airport. All thirty-five rooms are double rooms and all of them have bathrooms. Each room also has a TV but there’s no Internet access. The hotel takes credit cards.

The Sunrise Hotel is a lot closer to the centre of London, so it’s probably a bit more expensive than the Swan Hotel. It’s within walking distance of many theatres and shopping centres. Every room has an Internet connection and you have to pay to use that. You can pay in cash or by check in the hotel.

The Backpacker Hotel is pretty near the centre of London. You can take the underground there from the airport but it takes more than an hour to get there. They’ve got sixty rooms. They don’t have the Internet connection in each room. The hotel takes cash only.

Text 1

W: Wow! That gift shop had everything.

M: Did you buy anything?

W: No. I want to check the prices here.

Text 2

W: Excuse me. Can you tell me where the market is? I need some food.

M: Yes. It’s 3 blocks down this street, on the right.

Text 3

W: You’ve been writing that report for 5 hours. Don’t you feel hungry?

M: Sure, I do.

Text 4

W: Wow, you look like a drowned rat! Didn’t you know there’s a thunderstorm today?

M: I knew there would be a shower, but I didn’t realize it would rain cats and dogs.

Text 5

W: Oh, I thought we had to be at Sarah’s house by 6:30.

M: Sure we will. It’s only a quarter past six now. Anyway, the party starts at 7:00.

Text 6

W: How often do you eat out?

M: Well, very often. I eat out almost five times a week.

W: Wow, I really envy you.

M: Don’t envy me. It’s for business. In fact, I’m sick and tired of restaurant food. Sometimes I just want a home-cooked meal.

Text 7

W: Sorry, I overslept. My clock didn’t go off this morning.

M: Again?

W: That’s right, even though I did set the alarm last night.

M: Your clock never works. Perhaps you should buy a new one.

W: Well, if it breaks down again tomorrow, I’ll definitely buy a new one.

M: Maybe by then it’ll be too late.

W: What do you mean "too late"?

M: By that time you’ll be fired.

Text 8

M: Excuse me.

W: Hello, sir, may I help you?

M: Yes. Can I see that shirt on the top shelf please?

W: Sure. Here it is.

M: How much does it cost?

W: 50 dollars.

M: That’s too much.

W: How about the one next to the black gloves?

M: That’s nice. How much is it?

W: 30 dollars.

M: That’ll be fine. I’ll take a blue one, a red one and a white one.

Text 9

M: That was a great trip to Washington, D.C.

W: Tell me about it, Grandpa.

M: I was invited, along with about 90 other soldiers. We got on the plane at 8 a.m.

W: Who invited you?

M: Some private organization.

W: Why did they invite you?

M: To thank me and all the other soldiers who served in World War Ⅱ.

W: How long was the flight?

M: It only took about two hours.

W: Did you take pictures at the World War Ⅱ Memorial?

M: Oh, yes. We all took lots of pictures.

W: Then you flew back home that evening?

M: Yes. When we landed, TV reporters and the Army Band were there.

W: That must have made you feel really special.

M: Oh, it did. There were about 300 people there to honor us.

W: Well, you all deserve it. You helped save our country.

Text 10

"Friends" is a popular American comedy. It centers on the lives of six friends in their 20’s who live in New York. What makes "Friends" so appealing is its sense of humor, as well as its universal themes. Now, catching up with the dialogue in "Friends" might not be easy. The characters often speak fast. But there are a lot of physical acts and repetition — even if you don’t understand everything you’ll get what’s going on.

The characters have very different backgrounds, personalities and jobs. There are also some funny grammar and pronunciation lessons as they make fun of each other’s shortcomings, like how Ross corrects people when they say "who"instead of "whom", to improve his vocabulary.

A real life example of how "Friends" can improve your listening skills is my best friend. She got her job at an educational firm where she gives advice to educational projects mostly because of her ability to understand native speakers. She can also speak almost like a native speaker herself. She has seen each "Friends" episode more than three times. Is that a coincidence? I don’t think so.

Text 1

M: Can I help you find something?

W: I’m looking for summer clothes. The weather changed very suddenly, and I am too hot in my spring and fall clothes.

Text 2

M:Please let me pay for the meal.

W: Nope. It’s not my birthday. It’s on me tonight.

M: But we are here to celebrate your new job.

Text 3

M: I didn’t know you worked at this pizza place, Carrie.

W: Really? I’ve worked here for two years.

M: Wow, I can’t believe it’s been that long and I’ve never run into you.

Text 4

M: Which college will you be attending, Jasmine?

W: I’m not going to college. I’m going to move to Paris and learn all I can about dancing.

Text 5

W: What happened to your finger?

M: It’s just a paper cut.

W: How did you do that?

M: I was putting some papers away for my boss and one scratched me. It’s no big deal.

Text 6

M: I want to buy a boat.

W: Why do you need a boat?

M: Well, if I had one, we could take it out on the lake during the summer. Doesn’t that sound fun?

W: It does. But won’t it be expensive?

M: I’m not worried about that. The only thing I haven’t figured out is where I’ll keep it.

W: I’m sure you could leave it outside your parents’ house. They wouldn’t mind.

Text 7

W: There’s a football game tonight,so the parking lot will be closed. We can leave work early.Would you like to go for a bike ride with me?

M: Tonight?Have you seen the weather report?

W: No,why?

M: There is supposed to be a big storm. The forecast this morning predicted heavy rain.

W: Then maybe the football game will be canceled.

M: I doubt it.Rain or shine,those guys will play.There’s big money in football,you know.

W: I say rain or shine, those guys are crazy.Well,I still want to do something tonight. What are you going to do?

M: I’ll probably watch the football game.

W: Are you serious?You’ll catch a cold!

M: I’m pretty sure it’ll be on TV,Shelly.

W: Well, count me out.I’m going to the mall.

Text 8

W: This is awful! Did you read the newspaper this morning?

M: No, I usually catch the news on TV before I leave for work.

W: Then you must have heard that another person was hit by a car yesterday.

M: Yeah, it was all over the news.

W: That’s the fourth accident like that in a month! And two of them happened in the same place! I wonder if the city will start to make intersections safer for walkers to cross. I know I’m scared to death to cross some of these streets. The cars just fly by at twice the speed limit!

M: Yeah, it’s getting pretty bad especially when the people who are walking don’t pay attention to the signs and signals. They seem to just step right out into traffic all the time! They just expect drivers to see them.

W: Something needs to be done. I’m going to the next city council meeting. I’ll bring up our concerns there.

M: Do you think our city leaders are going to care? It could be an expensive project.

W: I’m sure most people at the meeting will agree with me.

Text 9

W:Oh, you’re home from work already. How was it? Did you meet your new boss today?

M: Yeah. I met him at the office this morning.

W: What did you think of him?

M: I was actually surprised. He didn’t seem like a boss at all.

W: What do you mean?

M: He wasn’t dressed professionally. He wore jeans and a regular shirt that didn’t fit him.

W: That’s surprising. You’re working for a financial company. I would expect everyone to wear suits.

M: I guess he’s so rich he doesn’t care. He’s also in his sixties, so maybe he figures he’s lived long enough to do whatever he wants.

W: Maybe. Did you talk to him?

M: Yeah, we talked. I tried to ask him about my new job, but he just made a lot of jokes and asked me what singers I like.

W: Did he give you any advice at last?

M: Yeah, he did say I should read the newspaper every day. He said that will help me understand the economy.

W: Well, here. You can take my copy of The Times. I’m done with it.

Text 10

W: I was always the quiet kid in my class. After lunch, when most of the kids played sports, I used to go inside and read in the classroom. In middle school, I started a book club. No one else joined, so I just did it by myself. In high school, most of my classmates were busy going out to see the movies or having parties. I wrote for the school newspaper and worked as a teacher’s assistant in the English department. When I got to college, I met a lot of other people who were just as into books as I was — people who didn’t care about the football team drinking on the weekends. This was the first time in my life that I had started to feel like I fit in. It was also when I got serious about my own writing. I wrote a series of short stories that were based on my own life, and during my senior year, I got them published! Now that I’m a successful writer, I travel around the world and give talks almost every day. But my favorite activity is still sitting in a comfortable chair and reading a good book.

Text 1

M:We have to go to London for a couple of days. I prefer to go on the train, but I suppose you want me to take the car.

W: You got it. Then we don’t need to get to the station with our luggage.

Text 2

M: Did you just see a ghost or something? You look frightened.

W: I just saw the horror movie The Final Destination. It really scared me.

Text 3

M: My refrigerator is 15 years old and it’d worked just fine until last night.

W: You’ll never be able to repair it. So it might be time to invest in a more recent model.

Text 4

M: So what should we do first?

W: How about the cake and ice cream?

M: OK, let’s light the candles. Well, and make a wish! Don’t tell me.

Text 5

W: I’m very grateful for what you have done for my daughter.

M: That’s all right. That’s my job.

W: I know she has brought a lot of trouble to you. Thanks.

M: No trouble at all. By the way, keep her in bed for two weeks.

Text 6

M: Do you happen to have any aspirin?

W: Toothache again?

M: No, I’ve got a terrible headache this time.

W: I’m sorry. Actually, I do know a really good natural cure for it.

M: Oh, good. I’ll try anything.

W: Take an onion and cut it in half. Then put the onion halves on the sides of your head, and then tie a towel around your head just to keep them where they are. It’s a little smelly, but it always works.

M: Hope I will get better soon.

Text 7

M: Oh no! I can’t find my wallet!

W: Your wallet? How is that possible?

M: Yes. At the movies, I had paid for the popcorn and drinks. Did I leave it there?

W: No, I don’t think so because you gave me $10 for the hot dogs later at that new hot dog place.

M: After that we went to the convenience store. I paid for the chocolate there.

W: Yeah. And then you paid for the taxi ride back home. Right! I know where you left it!

Text 8

W: You’ve probably made a lot of records. Have you ever made a record on your own?

M: Yes, last summer. I made it in the summer and it came out in September. It’s called Groove Approved.

W: And is it doing well?

M: Quite well, especially in America. My records are often played on radio there — more than here in Britain.

W: And so this has been a busy year for you?

M: Yes. I’ve had a very busy year. I’ve toured the States twice. I’ve made my own album and I’ve done a tour of Germany.

W: And something you’ve forgotten! You’ve had a number one record.

M: That’s right! It was called The Living Years. It was number one in Britain and in America.

Text 9

W: Good morning, sir. What can I do for you?

M: Good morning. I’d like to reserve a hotel room.

W: That should be no problem. May I have your full name, please?

M: My name is John Sandals.

W: Hello, Mr. Sandals. My name is Michelle. When do you need that reservation?

M: I’m planning to visit New York from Friday, April 14 until Monday, April 17, which means I’ll be staying in the hotel for 3 nights.

W: Well, do you prefer a smoking or non-smoking room?

M: Non-smoking, please.

W: Is a larger bedroom OK?

M: That sounds fine.

W: Our room rates recently went up. Each night will be $308. Is that okay with you?

M: That price is reasonable.

W: OK, Mr. Sandals. Your reservation is on our computer. All we need now is a phone number.

M: Certainly. My phone number is 626-555-1739.

W: Thank you for your reservation by telephone, Mr. Sandals. We look forward to seeing you in New York!

Text 10

Hello, my name is Sally Croft, and I’m here to tell you about next month’s trip to France. First of all, a lot of you have asked what the weather will be like next month. Well, it will be cool in the evening, so I recommend that you take a sweater with you. During the day, temperatures will be high so don’t forget your sun cream, your sunglasses and of course your swim suit.

The hotel we are staying in will provide shampoo and soap. Toothbrushes and toothpaste are your responsibility, though. Meals are served in the dining room on the first floor as follows: breakfast is served from 6:30 am to 10 am; lunch is available between 12:30 pm and 2 pm and dinner is from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

And a final word about travel documents: You will not be allowed to enter France without your passport, so I think that’s about all. If you have any questions about the trip, I’ll be in the coffee bar all morning.
