Text 1

M: Rainy day, isn't it?

W: No, it's like what the radio said. It's cloudy.

M: I wish it would be fine for the weekend.

Text 2

W: Are you satisfied with yesterday's football match?

M: Don't mention it. My aunt asked me to look after my cousin. The boring thing was that the phone kept ringing, and my cousin kept crying, so I missed the best goal.

Text 3

W: John, how do you like the play?

M: It's much more boring than the book. There are too many roles. I often mistook one for another when I was watching it.

W: Me too.

Text 4

W: Hey, Peter, it's Elaine. I'm preparing for Professor Butler's class tomorrow. And I need the notes for last Tuesday when I was absent. Have you got them?

M: Yeah. I think so. Hold on and let me look.

Text 5

W: What seems to be the matter, young man?

M: I've had a cold for a few days.

W: Are you eating normally?

M: No. I just had a glass of water from morning till now.

Text 6

W: Tom, when are you leaving for London? The day after tomorrow?

M: No, today is July 10th, so that's in five days.

W: Have you booked your plane ticket?

M: Yes. I did that this morning.

W: Will you go to the airport by bus or by taxi?

M: Jim will go to the airport that morning. He'll give me a lift.

W: That's great.

Text 7

W: It's gonna be sunny this Saturday. Wanna have a picnic in the park?

M: Great. And we can also ride our bikes for a while.

W: Yeah. Then there will be a birthday dinner in the evening.

M: Oh, I almost forgot it! Hope it won't last long. I really want to get home early to watch the football game.

W: Me too. I was invited to attend a local painting exhibition in the museum this Sunday morning. So I really need to have enough time for a good sleep.

Text 8

W: Henry, I heard you're planning to buy a used car.

M: Yes. Actually I went to look at some used cars this afternoon.

W: What cars did you look at?

M: First I was shown a Honda. It was small and in perfect condition. It cost $9,000. But I didn't like the color because it was red.

W: How about the second car you saw?

M: It was a Ford. It was a fine car, too. And it cost just $6,000. But it didn't have air conditioning. I couldn't imagine driving a car without air conditioning.

W: So what about the third car you were shown?

M: It was a Mazda sports car which was $1,000 cheaper than Honda and also in good condition.

W: Did you like it?

M: Yes. I took it out for a test drive. But I didn't buy it because Lisa didn't want a sports car.

Text 9

W: What's that, Brett?

M: It's my new e-book reader. I'm just downloading some new books onto it.

W: I haven't bought one yet. I still prefer a printed book.

M: But if you haven't tried it yet, how do you know you wouldn't like it better, Fiona? This e-book reader can store over 10,000 digital books. Imagine trying to carry an entire library from place to place.

W: I don't usually read 10,000 books all at once and I like the look of text on a printed page.

M: You mean the text on that yellowed page? On an e-book reader, you can change the text size and even line spacing.

W: Can I get all of the out-of-print books on my shelves in digital form?

M: Well, I'm not sure.

W: Until I can, I'll stick to my low-tech books. Let's take our seats. The class is about to begin.

Text 10

M: The Internet plays a very important part in people's life today. My family all use it in our life, but we use it for different purposes. My elder brother Andy is attending college. He often needs to search for information on the Internet for his study. My elder sister Lydia loves communicating with her friends on the Internet. She spends a lot of time on online chat tools. My father uses the Internet, too. But he mainly uses it to do his work. He sometimes also reads news on Rediff.com on his way home from work. Recently I told him two quick news websites — NYTimes, NBC News. My mother loves entertaining herself on the Internet. She often listens to music and watches movies on the Internet in her room at night. I love taking online language classes on the Internet. Now I'm learning Chinese. It really helps me a lot.
