Text 1

M: Good morning, Mrs. Wilson. I'm from The New York Review of Books. Could I ask you some questions about the prize you received this afternoon?

W: Certainly. What would you like to know?

Text 2

W: You bought the yellow bag. I hate that color. I think the black one is better.

M: I had no choice. My mother likes it. I prefer the red one.

Text 3

W: Mr. Black speaks French well and now he's beginning to study Chinese.

M: He also knows a little Japanese.

Text 4

M: I can't hear a thing over the music. We can't even talk. Let's go somewhere else for dinner.

W: But Dennis, the food will be here any minute. Why don't we just ask the waiter to turn down the music?

Text 5

M: What time will Mum and Dad be home? They seem to be spending a lot of time at their friend's house these days.

W: Their friend is a co-worker who hasn't been feeling very well for the past week so they are helping her with some of her housework.

Text 6

W: Jeff, I'm fed up with these TV programs. What shall we do this afternoon?

M: Let's go to the lake for a swim!

W: Swim in the lake in this weather? Are you kidding?

M: Don't worry about the weather, Pat. It'll be fine today. I've checked the forecast.

W: Weather forecasters are not always right. Look out of the window, Jeff. Can you see the trees? Can you see how windy it is? Just forget the forecast, Jeff. It's going to rain. There's going to be a storm!

Text 7

W: Dad, I'm flying to visit Aunt Diane's family next Monday. Should I pack my bags today?

M: Yes, I think so.

W: OK! What clothes should I take? I know it's hot there.

M: Yes, but it rains a lot. You can buy an umbrella or a jacket after arriving there. Just pack some dresses.

W: OK. And who's meeting me at the airport?

M: Well, Aunt Diane and Uncle Matt will be at work, but your cousin David can pick you up.

Text 8

W: Hi Simon. I hope you like our school!

M: Yes, I do! Los Angeles is great. I've made lots of friends and I really enjoy my courses.

W: Good! Me too! By the way, you didn't tell me what you are studying here.

M: Didn't I? I'm doing business studies.

W: Really? That's great. Are you working in a company after graduation?

M: Maybe. I was born in Canada. My parents are in Toronto and I hope to find a job in a company there.

W: What about your friend Zoe?

M: She's from Sydney, Australia. Her father runs a hotel there and she is studying hotel management.

W: Wow, both of you have your plans.

M: Yes, we do. What about you, Lucy?

W: Well, I'm studying law.

M: Great! So I know who to call if I need a lawyer in the future.

W: Sure. Classes are going to start. Let's go.

Text 9

W: OK,we've got all our cloud research so let's decide how to organize it.

M: We should probably start by saying how clouds are formed, and then move on to the different types of clouds. We can separate them into low-level, medium-level and high-level clouds.

W: Great, and we should also make a PowerPoint to make the presentation more interesting.

M: Right. We should have small cards, too. I'm useless at remembering what to say without them.

W: Me too. Well, I'm quite happy to organize everything we have found out about clouds and make sure it fits into our presentation time.

M: Actually, I'd better do that. How about if you make the presentation slides?

W: OK.

M: Then I'll also look on the Internet for pictures of different types of clouds.

W: That will be great. I'll prepare the cards so we don't forget what we're saying.

M: Sounds great. What section do you want to talk about?

W: I hate speaking in front of people so I'd prefer not to do the introduction.

M: I'll do that. If you don't want to talk much, then why don't you just do the middle bit about the medium-level clouds?

W: That's OK.

Text 10

W: Now, let me tell you a bit about the library. The library opens daily from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, as I told you earlier. The reception operates only between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, but it operates until 6:30 pm on Fridays to give students more time to organize their book requirements for the weekend. The reception is closed on Sundays. So you can't borrow books that day. Undergraduate students are permitted to take out four books at a time and each book may be kept for a period of two weeks. Postgraduates may borrow six books at a time. Borrowing time can be lengthened by a period of one week per book, but the student needs to come into the library in person with the book to be renewed. We do not renew book borrowings over the phone or by emails. If you are late in returning any book, then you will be charged a fine of two pounds for every week that you are late. You won't be able to take out any books until this fine is paid. This is not a method of earning money for the library but only what we have to do to ensure that all students have access to all the books that they will need.
