Text 1

M: Hello, Miss. You called about the broken toilet?

W: Yes, thanks for coming at such short notice.

Text 2

W: How about seeing the new film at the theater tomorrow?

M: Sorry. I have a GRE class every Friday, and the next day I always have to look over my notes at home.

Text 3

W: John, have you ever heard of a shop called Big Bargains?

M: I heard someone talking about that the other day, but I'm not sure how to find it.

W: It has opened on City Road. There are some really cheap products.

Text 4

W: Oh, sorry. I must have the wrong room.

M: Which room do you want?

W: The Committee Room. I thought it was here on the third floor.

M: It's on the fourth floor and, anyway, you are lost. This is the second floor.

Text 5

W: Sorry, my birthday was ruined by me personally by an incident a few days ago. Now I would rather stay away from any birthday party.

M: Oh, sorry. I know you would refuse my invitation.

Text 6

W: Matt, do you have a pet?

M: Yes, in fact, in my mom's house we have three pets — two dogs and a cat. My family actually raises dogs for helping blind people.

W: Oh, wow, that's cool. Um, why do people keep pets?

M: I guess the most important thing is companionship. Right! So there is always somebody there for you that will like you.

W: Yeah, that's true. OK, besides cats, dogs, and fish, what are some other pets people keep?

M: Well, I guess all types of things. My friend has a snake. I don't know if you mention that: snakes and insects, spiders...

Text 7

W: Rick, there will be a rock concert at Riverside Theater tonight. Do you want to go?

M: It sounds interesting. When will it begin?

W: Let me see...It will begin at 7:30 this evening.

M: But I told our daughter that we might go out for dinner tonight. I should have told you earlier.

W: She told me about that. We can eat first and then go to the concert.

M: That sounds perfect. How much are the tickets?

W: $20 per ticket for adults and half that price for children under 10 years old.

M: Luckily, our daughter is nine. We'd better hurry, or we don't have time to enjoy our meal.

M: This apartment, Green Valley, is only $700 a month, which is bigger but a lot cheaper than the one that I just showed you because it doesn't have an impressive view of the city.

W: Oh, well, it really doesn't matter to me whether it has a good view or not, and I do like the fact that the subway is so close. Does the apartment come fully furnished?

M: Sure. The TV set, fridge, washing machine and air conditioners are included in the rent. However, you'll have to pay for the electricity and the Wi-Fi service if you want.

W: Actually, I need to use my mobile phone and computer. Well, I think this place is perfect for me. I'd like to move into the apartment as soon as possible. Could I fill in the paperwork today?

Text 9

W: Where are you from, Corey?

M: I'm from Canada. I've just moved here.

W: Canada! Are you good at winter sports then?

M: Yeah, I love winter sports very much, such as skiing and snowboarding. I also like ice diving.

W: Wow! That sounds quite exciting!

M: Yeah. I've been doing that for 7 years, since I was 9. What do you do in your free time?

W: Well, swimming used to be my favorite hobby. But now I spend most of my spare time in the acting club I joined last year and I really love the theater. I really want to be an actress one day. Have you got any other hobbies?

M: Um, I guess I enjoy playing online computer games. I feel quite relaxed when playing the games and it helps me make new friends. How about you? Do you spend much time online?

W: Well, I'm not interested in computer games. I think it makes no sense to spend time playing something with strangers. I prefer chatting face to face with my friends.

M: I like chatting with friends too.

W: Oh, it's time for class. Our English teacher is coming. After class I'll introduce you to some of my friends.

Text 10

M: I usually set my alarm one hour before I start work, but today it started ringing at 9:00. I was already an hour late for work! I rushed into the kitchen and turned on the coffee maker, and hit my big toe on a chair. Then I went back to my room and looked in my closet. I had no clean clothes for work, so I put on my shirt and pants from the day before. At least my tie had been washed. Next, I had to comb my hair and brush my teeth. But in a hurry, I knocked my toothbrush in the toilet! I looked in the mirror and made a decision: Think positive, and focus on the rest of the day. And you know what? I had a productive day at work, and finished everything I needed to do early in the day. During lunch, I noticed my co-worker Karen looked sad. When I asked her what was wrong, she said she was having a bad day. She was worried that she would have to stay late, and would miss her daughter's school play. I told her my story and she laughed. Then I helped her finish her work so she could leave on time. She hugged me and thanked me, and it made me feel good. Looking back, I think it was a great day!
