Text 1

W: It'll cost you about $200 to have your car repaired, but since you have a membership card, you'll have to pay only 50% of it.

M: Oh, this is really cheap.

Text 2

W: The library will be closed in twenty minutes.

M: What time is it now?

W: It's six ten.

Text 3

M: Andy is a reporter from Chicago and he travels abroad all the time. And he has already been to the UK and France.

W: Really? Where is he now?

M: He has gone to China. He's coming back next Tuesday.

Text 4

M: Would you like some Coca-Cola or orange juice?

W: No, thanks. I think I have to take less drink that is high in sugar. And I prefer Chinese tea.

Text 5

M: Nice weather we're having, don't you think?

W: No, it's too cold.

M: I think it is just right.

W: I'd prefer a few degrees warmer.

Text 6

M: I'm terribly sorry, Tina. I've broken your glasses. I was looking for the dictionary you borrowed from me yesterday on the desk while you were out for a break.

W: Well, it doesn't matter. It's my fault. I forgot to return it to you on time after I used it to look up some words. I should say sorry to you first.

M: I needed it badly, so I began to search for it on your desk. I should have been careful. I'll pay for it.

W: No, there is no need to pay. You treat me an ice cream after class. That's enough.

Text 7

M: Ann, do you know where our boss is? I have been looking for her the whole morning.

W: You can visit Lily, who is our boss's secretary. Maybe she knows.

M: Thanks, but can you tell me where I can find her?

W: She is in her office, and here is her office telephone number.

M: You give me a big hand.Do you mind having dinner with me after work?I treat you.

W: I'd love to, but I've promised to go shopping with Mary.

M: Well, how about having coffee in the shopping mall? Then you can meet her there.

W: OK.

Text 8

W: What's going on, Mike?

M: I got a bill from the gas company in the mail today. Heating the home with natural gas is so expensive!

W: Yes, my bill is expensive too. I guess that's because the weather is turning colder so I've been turning up the heater lately.

M: So have I. But I still don't think my bill should be this high. Maybe I should call the gas company and check it.

W: Yeah, that's a good idea. I've called them before, and they have good customer phone service. Let me know what you find out.

M: OK. But first I have to prepare for the coming department meeting.

W: Oh, so do I. I nearly forgot it.

Text 9

W: Hi, Mike. I had an interview this morning.

M: I had an interview, too, a great one with Columbia University.

W: Really? What did they say? Will you get in?

M: Well, they didn't say anything for sure. But I think that with my grades and my personality, I'll have no problem. How was your interview with the University of Michigan?

W: The interview went fine. In fact, I apply to the university because my father would like me to go there. He and my grandpa both graduated from the university.

M: It's a great medical school. You would be following in your father's footsteps.

W: Ah! But I'd like to follow in my own footsteps. I want to study journalism so I can be a reporter.

M: That really suits you. You're the best in our class and you've done a pretty good job in our school paper.

W: Thank you. Hope everything goes well for both of us.

Text 10

M: Hello everyone! I'm very happy to be invited to this program today. I'd like to share with you my impression of Paris. Actually, there's something interesting to see in every corner of Paris: the old buildings, neighborhoods, and the historical monuments. The weather's been great too, cool and dry. Some aspects of life here are different from those in the United States. The most obvious thing is that there is much more activity in the streets than in a typical US city. People gather together in open markets, cafes, parks, and squares. Then, of course, there's the food. Food seems to be more important here. It's beautifully shown in windows and markets. Everything is fresher and better tasting than at home. I've gained five pounds since I arrived. There are a few things that bother me though. I'm still having a hard time with the language. People speak very fast and it's hard to get them to repeat things. People, in general, are less warm here and it's hard to make friends. I guess that can be true in any big city in a new country, but the French do seem to be less friendly than the people back home.
