Text 1
M: Where's Jane? She said she'd be here by 7:25, but it's 8:15 now.
W: Well, why don't you give her a ring?
M: I rang her ten minutes ago and there was no answer.
Text 2
M: You seem to be in the office all the time.
W: No. I take part in many different activities. What I fail to do is looking after my husband and kids.
Text 3
W: How about joining us for a cup of coffee?
M: I'd love to, but I'm too tired. I wrote a paper for my French class and I didn't go to bed till 3:00 this morning. I need to get some sleep.
Text 4
M: So the movie starts at 7: 00? We can take the 5: 30 train.
W: Actually, I suggest taking an earlier train. It's a popular movie, and we still need to buy tickets.
M: That's a good idea.
Text 5
W: Hello,English Language Center.
M: Hello, Sarah. This is Jacob. I have a bad cold. Could I take today off? I think I'll be ready for tomorrow.
W: Sure. We'll see if we can get another teacher to cover for you.
Text 6
W: Are you having a party?
M: Yes. I am holding a party for my cousin Sheila.
W: That sounds fun! Is it her birthday?
M: No. She graduates from nursing school. The family are very proud of her.
W: That's wonderful. Does she live here in Houston?
M: No, she lives in Dallas. But she will be moving to New York next year, after she gets married.
Text 7
W: Officer,I promise I've never seen anything like it in the past 20 years here.
M: I've been with the police for 30 years, and I don't think I have, either.
W: What do you think it could be?
M: It looks like a creature from a horror film.
W: I heard it last night. It must have been there for days.
M: It could be a dog or a small tiger.
W: I think it looks more like an old cat. I had one for 10 years. This is just bigger.
M: I think you are right. We'll need to get it out first.
Text 8
W: Well, honey, which one do you prefer? The one on Sunshine Street or the one on Candy Bar Street?
M: Oh, it's really difficult to choose. They're both nice.
W: Let me see. Do we really need four bedrooms? If you can accept a house with three bedrooms, we can choose the one on Sunshine Street.
M: Actually, I don't mind having three or four bedrooms.
W: Then what about the location? Sunshine Street is close to town, so it's very convenient for work and shopping.
M: But Candy Bar Street is next to a park. I love taking walks at the park. Besides, there is a bus stop and a subway station nearby.
W: And what about the rent? The one on Sunshine Street costs just 850 dollars a month and the other costs 150 dollars more.
M: Do we have to make a final decision now?
W: We'd better.
M: Well, Sunshine Street. We're saving money, after all.
W: OK.
Text 9
W: What would you like to eat for breakfast? I've made some eggs, bacon, and orange juice.
M: I'll skip orange juice. But if you have some coffee, I'll take that instead. No sugar, please. I'm trying to lose weight.
W: Really? I can't imagine drinking my coffee without sugar in it. And what's wrong with orange juice?
M: It has a lot of sugar.
W: But it says 100% pure orange juice on the container, and it's a great source of vitamin C.
M: It's true that orange juice has vitamin C, but look at the nutrition facts on the side.
W: Let's see...thirty grams of sugar. That's not that much, is it?
M: Well, for men, the recommended daily amount is thirty grams of sugar. So, that is almost all the sugar I should have, and that's just one cup of juice.
W: I didn't know that. Is it different for women?
M: Yeah, about ten grams less. Plus there is no vitamin D in it, and vitamin D is very important.
W: What is a good source of vitamin D?
M: Animal-based foods and some plant foods. Stay away from noodles and bread, though.
W: Well, I don't want this food to go to waste. I'll eat it. How about some low-fat yogurt and blueberries for you?

M: Well, I want to talk about an activity course for the summer holidays. It operated for the first time last year for a six-week period from the middle of July until the end of August. This year we will be holding the course again. There will be different things to do every week, so the children won't be repeating the same activities over and over again. However, I don't expect many children will come for the whole summer, as I'm sure their parents will want to be with them for a week or two. We do, however, ask that children attend full weeks, not just single days. It makes it easier for us to keep attendance records. The course is available for children aged 8-10. Next year, those aged 5-7 are welcome to the course. If a child or a child's parent is interested in coming to our summer activity course, they should go to our website www.summeractivities.co.uk and print out an application form. Send it in with part payment as soon as possible. You'll need to tell us which weeks you are planning to attend straightaway, but you won't need to choose your activities in advance.
