Text 1

W: How did you like the movie, John? Tom said it was boring. But I know you were excited to see it.

M: I can't decide. Some parts were all right, and others not so good.

Text 2

W: OK, I have already booked my flights and my hotel. Now I need to arrange a train ticket. Can I borrow your computer, Dad?

M: It is in my bedroom. Please save my work before using it.

Text 3

M: Oh no, I keep cutting bits out of my speech but it's still a minute longer.

W: One minute won't make much difference, will it?

M: Yes. There's a strict rule that all speeches must be no more than three minutes.

Text 4

M: What do you want to do on your vacation?

W: I'd like to visit some museums, enjoy a movie and buy the latest dresses. Oh, it seems I have to choose a fashionable city for my vacation.

Text 5

W: Can I ask why you have come to Sevilla?

M: Actually, I'm on a research trip. I'm looking for somewhere to hold our next European Conference.

W: So what does it include?

M: Well, visiting different hotels and exhibition centers that could host big events.

Text 6

W: Aren't you getting off at the next stop?

M: You're right. That's where I usually get off for the office, but it's early so I thought I'd stay on as far as the High Street and do a couple of things there.

W: Some shopping?

M: Yes, after I've given this book back. I've just finished the last chapter and it's a few days late, so I'll have to pay a fine, but it is worth it.

W: Then which shop are you going to? You said you need a new jacket.

M: I've already bought it. I'm going to buy Adele's new CD.

Text 7

M: Hello, Mary. This is Tom speaking. Would you like to watch the football game in the stadium tomorrow afternoon? I have two tickets, which my uncle bought last week.

W: That's wonderful. But I have to help my mother buy some food in the afternoon. You know, my father has gone to Shanghai.

M: Well, I think I can give you a hand if you want. I can go shopping with you tomorrow morning.

W: Wow! That's very kind of you. In that case, I will have enough time to do housework for my mother. Then I can watch the game in the afternoon. By the way, when will the game begin?

M: At 2:00 pm. I will pick you up at 1:30 pm.

W: That's great.

Text 8

M: How do you like your job?

W: It's all right. I get to travel sometimes.

M: That sounds great!

W: Yeah, but I'm not that happy to be working there. I've been in the same position for three years, and I would like to have some new responsibilities.

M: Well, have you talked to your boss about this? Perhaps it's time for a promotion.

W: Not yet. Unfortunately, I'm not qualified for a position with more responsibilities in my company unless I get a graduate degree.

M: Well, then you should get one!

W: I know. UCLA has the master's program that I'm really interested in, but I can't afford to move to Los Angeles. So, I will have to get my degree online.

M: Will you have time to do that while working full-time?

W: Probably. I will have to spend my evenings and weekends studying, but I think it will be worth it.

Text 9

M: Wow, I haven't seen these albums for two decades. I thought my parents had thrown all these out already.

W: I'm not surprised. They're covered in dust. Look, this one was taken when you were a kid. That's over 30 years ago.

M: Oh! This is my kindergarten class! See if you can find me in the picture.

W: That shouldn't be too hard. Hmm... Oh! I found you. You're the one sitting next to the kid with the red and blue shirt. Your hair was so long that it covered your ears!

M: Ha-ha, how did you find me so fast?

W: I can tell by the funny smile you had on your face. It's the same one you had in our wedding photo. Hand me the one from your high school days.

M: Here.

W: Oh, no! Your leg was injured. What happened? Was that from the car accident you told me about?

M: That was two years earlier. The one in the picture was from a fall I had while skiing.

W: Poor baby. We should take more pictures, you know. We hardly have any of us.

M: Yeah, you are right.

Text 10

M: Now could everyone sit down, please? I've got an important announcement to make. As you know, the national school poetry competitions that we usually enter are starting soon. The competitions are sorted into three levels: the high level, the middle level and the low level. The high level is for 17- to 19-year-olds, and the middle level is for 14- to 16-year-olds. But the one for people of your age, the low level, is the one we'd like you to go for. We hope all of you will try. As some of you may remember, the topic for last year was "Weather". This time the judges have chosen the topic "Change", and that could cover a lot of things. A new school, for example. So if you want to enter the competition but you're stuck for ideas, have a look at last year's winning poem called Rain on the competition website. You may know the girl who wrote it — Maria from our school. She also got a little book of her poems called Traveling published as part of her prize. Maria won some money for the school. If anyone in the school wins, we'd like to use the money for the library, as we feel that's the right way for it to be spent. Maria's prize money last year was spent on the computers and the lab. OK, that's all from me. For more information, please visit our school's website.
