Text 1

M: Did you have a problem with your computer, Pam?

W: Yes, Tom. But Jack fixed it. I just had a hard time with my computer.

Text 2

W: Fairly warm this morning, isn't it?

M: Yes, the sun is shining, but the wind is strong. The radio warned of heavy rain in two hours.

Text 3

M: Did you have a good trip?

W: Yes. The train was very fast, and it had a dining car where I could eat lunch. It was more fun than taking a bus.

Text 4

W: Hi, did you buy a new suit yesterday?

M: No, they were too expensive. And I saw lots of nice shirts I liked. Actually I ended up with a rather stylish new sweater.

Text 5

M: Ms. Miller, could you tell me how I can improve this article? I got a B plus.

W: It's quite good, actually. The language use is good and the main points are covered. There's just too much repetition. You could have said everything within two pages.

Text 6

W: The biggest mistake I made, uh...was leaving college in my last year and not completing my education. So, I am thinking of going back to school.

M: School? To study what?

W: Sociology. I'm interested in the development of society and social behaviour.

M: Cool. Is it what you studied years ago?

W: No, I majored in chemistry then.

Text 7

W: Hello, Will.

M: Hi, Sally. Can I ask your advice about something?

W: Sure. What is it?

M: My parents won't let me stay out after nine o'clock in the evening.

W: Why won't they let you stay out?

M: Well, one day last week I got home very late because I missed the last bus. It was midnight, and they were very angry because I didn't ring them or answer the phone.

W: Did you apologize?

M: They didn't give me a chance. We just got into a big argument.

W: If I were you, I'd say sorry for being late last week, and tell them I'll make sure I'm always back before 9:00.

W: Professor Johnson, I was deeply impressed by your lecture just now. I've learned a lot from it.

M: I'm glad you liked it.

W: Can I ask you some questions?

M: Yes, go ahead.

W: When did man first begin to paint pictures? 10,000 years ago?

M: We don't have a clear idea of that. But the oldest paintings discovered so far are about 20,000 years old. Paintings of large animals have been found in deep caves in southern France and northern Spain.

W: Why did these ancient people paint these pictures?

M: In my opinion, these people painted pictures for two reasons. First, they believed that the painted pictures could attract animals so that those animals could be killed and eaten.

W: It seems likely that the cavemen had similar ideas.

M: That's right. Second, painting was also a way for those people to express their feelings towards the outside world.

W: Thank you very much, Professor Johnson.

M: Hello, this is Simon Marshall. I spoke to you the other day about renting Flat 3A.

W: Oh yes, hello, Simon. What can I do for you?

M: Well, I just want to ask a few practical details. Firstly, you mentioned a storeroom. Where exactly is that? Is it next to 3A, on the third floor?

W: Well, the apartment is on the third, but the storeroom is a little way away, just past the second door to the right. Under the stairs, in fact.

M: But it's on the same floor, isn't it?

W: Yes, it is.

M: Fine. Is there hot water in the apartment?

W: Oh yes, it runs on the central heating. It's at a fixed 60 degrees. It used to be set at 55 but last year we were asked to increase it.

M: OK, now can you tell me a bit about the yard, and the garden? How big are they?

W: Well, the yard is about 20 square meters.

M: Oh, so there's room for my motorbike, then. Although it is not new, I like to keep it off the road at night. And the garden?

W: That's much bigger. About 150 square meters.

M: Great. OK, thanks for your help. I'll be in touch again soon.

M: Good morning, and welcome to our program. Today, we have pop star Margie Flynn joining us in the studio. Her hit single, Hold My Heart, has been at the top of the charts since it was published earlier this month, and has sold over five million copies worldwide. Margie grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and has been a big fan of country music since she was a small child. When Margie was only five years old, her father bought her first guitar. At six, Margie had already written and performed three songs. In high school, Margie spent most of her time on her music, leaving little time for sports or a social life. However, she always did her schoolwork and always got good grades. Margie graduated from high school at 17 and went on to attend The Juilliard School in New York. Margie has recently completed her studies and is now on tour in the United States. At 22, Margie Flynn is one of America's youngest and most promising talents, and we're honored to have her in the studio with us today. Hello, Margie.
