Text 1
W: When I'm 55, I will get social security payments from the government.
M: That means you have twenty years to go and then you can quit your job.
Text 2
M: Have you always liked classical music?
W: No. I've liked classical music recently. When I was in college, I liked pop music.
M: Well, in fact I'm really into rock music.
Text 3
M: What would you like to be in the future?
W: A teacher.
M: But if I were you, I would be a singer. You've got such a beautiful voice.
W: I wouldn't like to be a singer, but I'd like to become a music teacher to teach children to sing.
Text 4
M: Hey, Jenny. You look to be out of breath. Your train isn't due yet. Are you rushing to meet someone?
W: I'm going back to the ticket office.I had my phone when I went in there but I can't find it now.
Text 5
W: What are you reading about, Peter?
M: A dog named Marvin. In the story, the dog is a writer and he writes a children's book titled Marvelous Marvin and visits over 94 hospitals, schools and libraries in three different states.
W: That's just hard to believe!
Text 6
M: Hi, Lucy. What made you so angry?
W: The Smiths' dog! We have to deal with it!
M: Why? Has it been into your flower garden again?
W: The flower garden, the garbage can, and yesterday it started digging holes in the yard!
M: Did you talk to Mrs. Smith about it?
W: You know how she is. All sweetness and light to your face but then she never does anything. They should either keep the dog in the house or tie it up!
M: I'll talk to Mr. Smith about it tonight. He usually listens.
W: We need more than listening. We need action!
Text 7
M: Hello, Tina!
W: Hi, Jim! Have you ever done volunteer work?
M: I've thought about it, but I don't know what I should do. What about you?
W: I do it all the time.
M: Like what? Teaching homeless children? Helping old people?
W: I often clean up parks, and sometimes I work at an animal hospital.
M: Don't you find it a little boring?
W: No. In fact, I even like doing the cleaning.
M: How much time do you spend on it? Some people I know do it one or two days a week.
W: I don't do it that much...usually, five hours a week.
M: Could I do volunteer work with you next week?
W: Of course.
Text 8
M: Hello, Molly. You're not working in the cafe this afternoon?
W: Actually, I've given up the job. Yesterday was my last day.
M: Really? That's a bit unexpected. The workers there always seem quite happy and relaxed. Or you didn't get along with the boss?
W: That wasn't the problem. It was me. I was just getting far behind with my studies and I realized I would have to concentrate on my studies more.
M: Have you been worried about this for a long time then?
W: Well, no. Last term I was able to keep up, and my marks were fine, but there's so much to do now, such as writing longer essays.
M: Sure, but I never thought of you finding it difficult, like I often do! All the way along, you've been at the top of our group and you always appear so confident in lectures.
Text 9
M: Hello, Freya. Mountain biking is a popular sport among teenagers but there are fewer girls doing it. Am I right?
W: Yes, although we're growing in numbers. When I was 13, my dad bought my brother a mountain bike but I was given an ordinary one. I really wanted to join my brother, so in the end my uncle got one for me.
M: And now you're a winner?
W: Yes. I just won the Regional Championship. It was a difficult course with lots of rocks. At one point I thought I wasn't going to win. I was ahead and then I had to slow down because a photographer jumped out from behind a tree.
M: What do you think is the most important before a race?
W: Well, there's much to do. Check the course in advance. Take some exercise to keep fit. And the most important I think is that you must ensure everything's working on the bike.
M: How about the clothes?
W: The clothes shouldn't slow you down so they need to be tight. They might feel a bit uncomfortable when you first put them on, but you will soon get used to it. I'm not bothered about not looking pretty. I just want to win.

W: Mountain Elementary School is hosting an event to honor the artist Sheldon Williams. Please join us in the gym at 7:00 pm on Wednesday for a view of his artwork. Food and drinks will be served. Admission is free although we are asking for a donation of $5 at the door, which will go to the school's art department. Our school's book fair is happening in the library this week from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm, Monday through Thursday. Most books will be under $10. Mr. Wright's class is also hosting a bake sale to support the school's sports teams. Cookies, cakes, and other treats will be available at the book fair. Speaking of books, we are holding a parent book club on Tuesday evening in Mr. Smith's office. I know that many of your children hang out in the computer lab after school, but it will be closed this week for repairs. The lab will open again on Monday. Thank you for being an active part of your child's life. We really enjoy having you as part of the community here at Mountain Elementary School!
