W: Good morning, John! Did you sleep well last night? 

M: Oh, I never slept better. After a long tiring flight, I fell asleep quickly. I feel so relaxed now and ready to start my day.

 

W: I bought my first classical record when I was fourteen in middle school. It was a piece of violin music by a Russian musician.

M: I’d never heard of any classical music until I went to college, although my high school had a strong artistic atmosphere.

 

M: I heard you’re going to Sydney with your friends. How long will you stay there?

W: Half a year. I’m taking an English course there and I’ll pay a visit to local tourist attractions in my free time.

 

W: Is that eagle sculpture the one you won in yesterday’s design competition?

M: No, my parents gave it to me for my birthday. They know how much I love sculptures.

 

M: This afternoon I originally planned to go to the gym, but I happened to meet Alan in the parking lot. He was going to send Monica to the hospital. 

W: What happened to Monica? Was she going to have the baby?

M: Yes. Their car wouldn’t start, so I took them to the hospital.

M: I’ve just found a job as a newspaper salesman.

W: How could you spare time for that? Midterm exams are approaching. If our teacher knows about that, she

 may be angry with you.

M: Don’t worry about that. It’s just part-time and requires short working hours.

W: Okay, then. What kind of newspaper do you sell?

M: It’s a weekly newspaper named Sports World. So I need to be there only on Sundays.

W: Sounds interesting, especially that you’re crazy about sports.

M: That’s exactly what I am thinking about. It’s a good way to get social experience.

W: And a good way to get some pocket money.

M: OK. When do we need to finish?

W: Hmm, tomorrow is Tuesday and you’ll have two interviews, so we only have three days in total to perfect the report. We can get together the day after tomorrow and check it through carefully.

W: Do you know that about 17 percent of the world’s food goes to waste each year? That amounts to more than 900 million tons of food. And just in the UK, about 10 million tons of food is thrown away every year.

M: What a waste!

W: Yeah, it costs a huge amount of money to collect, not to mention the CO₂ it produces.

M: Where does most of the wasted food come from? Are we the one to blame?

W: Actually, restaurants are some of the worst offenders. That’s why we adopt responsible practices in our kitchen now. For example, we’re very careful about the serving size. We keep an eye on how much food customers leave and change it accordingly.

M: Don’t you get complaints about small servings?

W: No, the prices are also lower. But if someone wants more, we’ll meet his need. Besides, we used to have no machine to deal with food waste. Now we have food waste recycling equipment.

M: We’ve got more than one hundred seats at our place but no such machines. I must go and get some as quickly as possible!

M: Our guest today is Amy Martles, an expert in designing dance steps and movements. Amy has produced many diverse dance works, which are performed in New York’s theaters. So Amy, how did you begin your career?

W: I used to put on plays at primary school in San Bernardino, California and I was very good at gymnastics. But my coach saw something in the way I used my body to express feelings and suggested I try private dance classes. Then I learned dancing and later came to New Jersey to learn to design dance steps and movements.

M: Do you need to be a good dancer to design dance steps and movements?

W: I’m not quite sure, but I know some great designers who hardly ever set foot on stage. That’s not the point really.  It’s more about making someone behave in the best way that they can.

M: Sure. What do you want to achieve in your works?

W: Well, I hope the dances can say something honest and meaningful to the audience. I want people to understand what we’re doing and the idea we’re trying to put across.

M: So it’s more about the audience. That’s really impressive. I believe you’ll make it.

M: My parents drove to the countryside in the early morning last Saturday, leaving me struggling with the history coursework I had to finish by Monday. It was really a tough and unhappy morning. In the afternoon, to find inspiration for the work, I wandered in the town center alone and saw a museum. I bought a ticket and went in. The opening hours are from 9 am to 5 pm. Knowing I only had around two hours to visit, I quickened my steps. There are a lot of things on show. The theme of the first floor is "Fishing Port" and I got to see some ancient deep-sea fishing equipment there. Then I went one floor up. What came into sight were some old tape machines I’d never seen before. I listened to a lively commentary on their history. On the third floor, I met a tour group, whose guide explained there is an unusual prehistoric painting newly exhibited in the museum. I was very eager to take a look and followed them upstairs to the fourth floor. It was such an amazing painting but regretfully, we weren’t allowed to take pictures. Soon, it was closing time and I had to leave. Anyway, the museum is obviously a source of inspiration for all the enthusiasts who come to visit it.
