M: Since it is the rush hour, let’s take the subway.

W: OK. It’s not as cheap as the bus, but it will save us much time.

W: I thought I spoke English well, but people keep asking me to repeat what I’ve said, so maybe I’m not doing so well after all.

M: There’s nothing wrong with your English. It’s just that they can’t hear what you’re saying. You should raise your voice next time.

M: How about reading the business section of the newspaper together?

W: My teacher, Mrs. Green, says you have to read books to me every night, and the newspaper doesn’t count. Mom always reads me stories.

M: OK. Let’s read this book. It’s about animals.

W: I should do the shopping this week when I’m free. Do you know the business hours of the newly opened supermarket?

M: It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on workdays, and from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on weekends.

W: What’s wrong with you, Peter? You look really pale.

M: I feel like throwing up. I’m afraid you have to drive the kids to school this morning.

W: Sure. Just go back to the room and lie in bed for some time.

M: Er, you’re Jessie Cave, aren’t you? What a pleasure to see you! Our paths crossed last month. Do you still remember that?

W: Oh, yes, the book signing event.

M: Exactly! Are you here for your new novel Sunset?

W: Yes, I’ve just met some publishers and we’re having lunch together. Do you live in Hawaii now?

M: No, I come to visit my family. Would you mind if I take a picture of you?

W: With pleasure. But we should make it quick. I’m already behind time.

M: Look at this picture of a dinosaur. Oh, it’s a T-Rex. It looks true to life.Who drew it?

W: Mike did it. Last weekend, we went to a museum which staged an exhibition on the theme of dinosaurs. He talked with me about drawing a dinosaur when we came back and I suggested he draw a T-Rex.

M: Some studios are rushing out movies to make money by taking advantage of the public’s enthusiasm for dinosaurs. Why not suggest he tell a story through drawing?

W: Although Mike can draw pictures with great skill, he isn’t good at telling stories.

M: That’s true. But you are good at it. You can make up a story and Mike draws.

W: That’s a great idea. I will tell Mike that! And I should go to the library to get some related books.

W: What do you think about the idea of going for a picnic this weekend?

M: Well, it’s a bit boring. I think a barbecue on the beach would be more fun.

W: I agree, but it’s quite a lot of work. Someone has to stand there and cook all the time. Maybe we should go to a restaurant instead.

M: It’s really expensive and not so free to go to a restaurant.

W: What about having a party at home? We could order pizza or just some hamburgers. Then we watch movies or TV shows together.

M: Emm, how about a fancy dress party? We could have a competition and decide who is wearing the most special clothes. And for food, everyone could bring a different dish. Sharing food is always my favorite part at parties. Also, that way we can share the work.

W: Sounds fun. I can’t wait for the weekend.

M: How do you do, Ms. Brown? Do you mind if I ask you some questions?

W: Of course not. Go ahead.

M: You’ve been working in a university, haven’t you?

W: Yes, in Britain.

M: How do students in your school get jobs when they graduate?

W: Most universities have their own service system and they seem fairly successful in finding jobs for students. So does ours. It’s able to get jobs for 30% to 40% of new graduates.

M: Well, the percentage of employment seems fairly low.

W: Er…it’s not if you consider other options students take up. For example, there are a fair number of students who choose to undertake further study. Then there are others, a second group of students who decide not to take a job immediately after university.

M: That reminds me. I do know several students who take time off. Maybe they plan to see the world first after graduation. Young people always want more adventure and freedom.

W: I totally agree. And there’s a third group, the students who can’t get the jobs they really want.

M: So the percentage is not low really.

W: I think so. And when I say 30% to 40% of graduates find jobs through the system, that doesn’t     mean only those graduates find jobs. It’s the main way of finding jobs. Some students also look through job  websites, newspapers and particular magazines which may advertise jobs they are interested in.

Jaye Gardiner was born with a strong interest in science. When she was in first grade, she was invited to take part in a second-grade science class. The students did a simple experiment. They put a length of plant into a cup of colored water and then watched what happened. The color of leaves changed over time. To Gardiner, it was like magic. Since that day, Gardiner has dreamed of becoming a scientist. As a youngster, Gardiner was fortunate to have parents who encouraged her interests. Her mother and father placed greater stress on hard work than on grades, so she put in more and more effort. Gardiner is now a scientist working at a cancer center. She’s also using her free time to learn skills she’ll need to run her own laboratory one day, which is her goal. Besides, she is a "science communicator" and wants more people to discover the wonders of science. In 2015, Gardiner set up JKX Comics with two of her scientist friends to make biological science clear or easy to understand on the website through cartoons. The text is simple and the pictures are joyful. Gardiner believes science cartoons aren’t just for kids. They make more people fall in love with science.
