M: Oh, you’ve got a new book. Who is it aimed at?

W: The young. Besides, this is not a book about general eating habits. It’s about how food production has developed through the centuries.

W: I heard that you are from Bradworthy.

M: Yes, it is located in the county of Devon. It is a pleasant village with plenty of restaurants, shopping centers, tourist attractions and fun activities for the whole family.

W: Sounds great.

M: You got to school early today! Did your dad drive you to school?

W: No, no sooner had I arrived at the Underground station than the train came. I was lucky.

M: But was the station not crowded? The station near my home was so crowded. I even thought about walking to school instead.

M: Let’s play table tennis. It’s your favorite sports, right?

W: Yes, but I’m sorry, I am going to the animal shelter. Whenever I have free time, I'd love to go there to feed pigs, sheep and horses. Look, there are some amazing pictures of them.

M: I’ve found my smart phone!

W: Great! Where was it?

M: I looked for it everywhere, including my dad’s car and my jacket pocket. But it suddenly occurred to me that I’d left it in my desk drawer and that’s where I found it.

M: Sarah is a bit down today.

W: What happened?

M: She got a B in microbiology. You know, she was always a straight A student in high school. She expected to get As at university, too.

W: The courses at university are much more difficult. Did you get a B this time?

M: No, worse. It is a very difficult course, indeed.

W: Good morning, sir. When is the next train to London?

M: The next train to London departs at 11:25 am, half an hour from now.

W: One ticket, please.

M: OK. It costs 25 pounds.

W: And here is 30 pounds. By the way, is food served on the train?

M: Yes. Lunch is served at noon, just nearly half an hour after you get on the train.

W: Thanks.

W: Could you give us an example of good design? 

M: Sure. The traditional can opener is an old-fashioned tool. People have been using it for years because it’s not complex to use. It looks unimaginative but it’s still liked by lots of people nowadays.

W: What about poor design?

M: Well, I was trying to withdraw money from my bank account by a cash machine the other day. The order of instructions on the screen was changed so that the most common choices were at the top of the screen. This was great. But the screen had also been changed. It was placed at an angle that reflected light so badly that it was hard to see the instructions on it clearly.

W: What kind of things do you assess for usability? 

M: I used to work with companies making knives and sweepers. But recently usability has become important for the website, which is the area I’m involved in now.

M: Jane, why did you choose to major in home economics at Eastern Illinois University?

W: Some of my friends studied home economics. They wanted me to go to the same university as them, rather than going to Eastern Illinois University. If I’d done that, I could have shared a flat with them, but being close to home appealed to me most.

M: Did you enjoy the course?

W: Yes. I learned a lot about things like food tasting. We had to taste a dish and try to judge whether the public would like it. As the training got more complex, it became harder to be in agreement and there were even some tense moments. But it was worth it in the end.

M: What was your first job?

W: I worked for a large food company. They sent me to work in Denmark for two years. I was invited to visit local food companies. I met lots of people there, and they’ve helped me and taught me loads. I’m still in touch with them. All these influenced my work.

M: Do you enjoy your present job?

W: Well, I have to interview clients to find out about their preference and understand what they need. I taste food to make a judgement about its quality, but I don’t like it, and then there are reports to write, which some people hate but I never mind.

A visit to London Zoo is much more than just a walk around it to see great shows. Our history tour is a fantastic addition to a trip to the zoo. You will walk through the zoo with a guide, hear stories of how the zoo inspired Charles Darwin's amazing work and discover the history of many historic buildings there. The tour takes place on Friday and Saturday mornings and it’s important to make advance bookings. The program will begin with a welcome talk at 10:15 am. You should meet at the main entrance. It is important not to be late as the tour starts at 10:30 am. The guided walking tour ends at 11:15 am. Then you will have the rest of the day to explore the zoo by yourselves. The tour costs 5 pounds per person. Instead of coming to the ticket office, bookings can be made by phone, and I recommend booking online. We also offer private bookings to groups of up to 20 people. The cost for a private group tour is 80 pounds. If you cancel your booking over 14 days before the tour date, you will be able to get all your money back. But if you cancel your booking later than that, you can only get half of your money back.
