W: I nearly came to see you yesterday morning.

M: I wish that you had. Then I wouldn’t have fallen off the chair while washing the windows.

W: Bill, I heard you got full marks in the math exam. Congratulations! And how did you make it ? Math always bothers me.

M: Thanks! I spent much time reviewing and turned to Mrs. White or my father when having difficulties. I’m sure you’ll do a good job with preparations as well.

M: I’d really like to learn how to play the violin, but it looks so complex. 

W: If you can play one musical instrument, you’ll learn how to play others relatively quickly. Why not go over the basic skills first? You’ll progress gradually.

W: It’s Malia’s birthday next Monday. That’s the day after tomorrow. I still have no idea what to buy for her. 

M: Me neither! I need to attend a meeting tomorrow morning. Maybe we can go and buy her a gift together in the afternoon.

M: Do you always draw and paint in your spare time?

W: Yes, I learned that back in primary school. What do you enjoy doing when you are free?

M: Reading magazines. I just started one named Education Brainiac yesterday.

W: Carl, which of you is going to walk the dog?

M:It’s Mary’s turn, but she left home early in the morning.

W: Mary went to the airport to give her good friend Jane a send-off, who is moving abroad. She’ll be back before 10 o’clock. And the dog needs a bath. Could you help with that?

M: Sure. Leave it with me.

W: By the way, where did you put dog food? I couldn’t find it.

M: Oh, it ran out. I forgot that when going shopping yesterday. I’m sorry.

W: That’s all right. I’ll go to get some later. 

M: Okay. I’ll also wash the doghouse after bathing him.

M: Can you imagine I forgot to remind Mr. Smith of the important meeting?

W: What an awkward mistake! As a secretary, you should keep the manager informed of all the important schedules. This is quite different from your previous job as a bank clerk. 

M: I certainly know it, but this morning I didn’t feel very well, so... Mr. Smith must be very angry.

W: You know, the most worrying problem is the possible loss caused by that. Any small mistake may cost our company much.

M: I understand what you mean. It makes me look unsuited for my job. How can I make up for it?

W: Apologize to him and give an explanation. I believe he will take your condition into careful consideration. 

M: I’ll go to his office now. I hope our boss will forgive me.

W: Oh no! I don’t have Amanda’s phone number.

M: What’s wrong?

W: Amanda said we should get together again and that I should call her, but I don’t have her phone number.

M: I see. Don’t worry about it. For Americans, that’s usually a polite way to say goodbye. You know, when Americans say "How are you?", they don’t want you to tell them how you are and it’s just a greeting. You’ll get used to that as you stay longer in America.

W: So saying "Let’s get together sometime" is similar to that?

M: Yeah, that’s right.

W: Things here are so different from those in my hometown in Japan. I have gained a lot of knowledge. 

M: Understanding different cultures is an important aspect of mastering and using English.

W: I profit more by the consultation with you than years of reading. 

M: I’m happy to be able to help you. Just turn to me when you have cultural problems. 

W: It’s so caring of you. Thanks a lot.

M: How amazing the Winter Games are! Do you think so, Linda?

W: You can say that again, Tom! The sports field is so splendid; the players are skillful and impressive. And my favorite part is the opening ceremony. Did you go there to watch any game on the spot?

M: No, but Jack is a volunteer there. As the event is over, visitors are allowed to go into the stadium. He invited us to visit it next weekend.

W: That doesn’t appeal to me. It’s freezing cold. 

M: You have been expecting to learn to ski. Now it is the perfect time. 

W: Well, I’ve just come back from a one-week winter camp and I don’t want to have another long trip so quickly.

M: Come on. Three days would be enough for the whole journey according to our arrangements. Jack told me there is an awesome area for skiing, and beautiful snow scenes. He has already reserved some hotel rooms nearby.

W: Well, that sounds attractive now. But I have agreed to do something with my friend Susan at that time.

M: She wants to go, too. 

W: Really? Well... I’ll go with you.

M: When I was a little child, my grandmother died. I felt extremely sad but had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laughter turned into crying. I couldn’t understand why. This thing stuck in my mind, so I decided to learn more about crying after growing up. Through many books and lots of research, I discover just as laughter has many advantages for health, so does crying. Jerry Bergman, author of "The Miracle of Tears" and many books, wrote that crying removes chemicals caused by stress in his article. Holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering can be bad for physical health, leading to high blood pressure and heart problems. Also, psychologists agree that when we cry, people around us become more ready to give support and comfort. This way, crying helps bring people together and build a close relationship. People usually don’t notice that aspect, but it is valuable. Tears also enable us to understand our feelings better, and sometimes we don’t even know we’re very sad until we cry. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don’t fight it.
