M: Your apartment always looks so good and spotless. Do you do the cleaning by yourself or does your mother help clean it?

W: I’m in the lab most of the time. I live with Helen. It is she who does the work.

 

W:It’s a shame that you didn’t win your tennis match.

M:I might have won if I had listened to my coach.

 

M: Shall we run around the park or go for a bike ride to the countryside?  

W: They are both good activities. But neither of them interests me. I feel like swimming in the gym.

 

W: Would you mind if I opened the door?

M: Of course not. The heat in the room is unbearable. Open the door to let in some fresh air.

 

M: Do you like our new history teacher?

W: I’m tired of his endless talking. He never gives us a little time to discuss things.

M: You can’t say that!  He’s a very knowledgeable person.

W: Hi, Dick. Would you like to go to the theater with me this afternoon?

M: I wish I could, but I have to spend the rest of the day in the library. I have a paper due tomorrow.

W: Oh, is that for Professor Lowell’s literature class?

M: Yes, I have to write a book review.

W: That’s hard. How is it going now?

M: Not very well. And I also have to study for the maths and history exams, but I don’t know what to do at all.

W: You know, I’ve been doing well in maths, so I’d be happy to help you. If you like, we can start tomorrow.

M: Oh, that’ll be great.

W: Hilton Hotel, please. It’s so cold. I’m freezing.

M: Not really. It gets warm in July and August. That’s the best time to visit the city. Oh, here comes the rain!

W: It’s raining hard. By the way, how long do you think  it will take to reach the hotel?

M: About half an hour if there is no traffic jam. That’s about 8:40. Would you like to listen to some light music?

W: That would be lovely.

M: I understand, but you really need to slow down. Your situation will get worse and worse if you go on like this.

M: I called you last week but your mother said you were sightseeing in Italy. Did you go to Rome?

W: No. I went to Rome last year and Venice the year before last, so this year I went to Ferrara. You may not have heard about it, as it isn’t one of the most famous Italian cities.

M: Oh, I’ve heard about it before but never been there. How was your time there?

W: It was great. I first visited the city center. The famous palace and castle are both there in the heart of the city and they are really amazing. But I didn’t go to the palace, because it was very crowded.

M: What else did you visit there?

W: After that, I went to visit the part of the city with a lot of old historical buildings. Then I visited the museum.

M: You seem to really like traveling.

W: Yes, I love it. I usually travel abroad twice a year, but this year I’ve taken one more trip than usual.

Annie Oakley was a woman who became famous for her ability to shoot. There are hundreds of stories about her. Many of her stories especially her adventures in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show are extremely attractive. 

Annie Oakley was born in 1860 in Ohio. Her family was very poor. At the age of 8, she started to teach herself how to shoot and began hunting animals for food or sold the animals to local restaurants to help earn money for her family. When she was 15, she beat Butler, who traveled around to challenge people to the shooting competition. And then Butler was impressed by her skills. Later she got the name "Little Sure Shot".

She married Butler in 1876. They started putting on shows together, showing their abilities to shoot. In 1885, Oakley and Butler joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. They traveled to many countries and gave many performances. In 1887, they performed in England for Queen Victoria. Oakley received more and more attention. For sixteen years, Oakley had been the star of the show except for a brief period. 

Annie Oakley passed away on November 3, 1926. People have written many songs, plays and books about her to remember her. One of the most famous examples is a Broadway musical called Annie Get Your Gun. The musical is still playing today to remember the woman with an unusual skill. She shows that women could be just as good as or even better than men.
