Text 1

W: We've just received a timetable for the exams. We don't have much time to prepare.

M: So let's cover the important topics and review last year's question papers.

W: Good idea!

Text 2

W: I'll see you at the cinema this evening.

M: Better still, why don't we meet in the New Icon Cafe to have a nice little talk?

W: Sounds wonderful. I've always wanted to have a drink there.

Text 3

W: Hi, Jim. Did you have a nice weekend?

M: Yes, Kate. It was great. I went camping with my friends in the Catskills.

W: Really? How was the weather there?

M: It was very nice.

Text 4

M: There is a new drug that may prevent old people from losing their memories.

W: That would be great. Forgetting things is a great problem for the elderly. This discovery could be very important.

M: Yes. I don't want to lose all my happy memories when I'm old.

Text 5

W: We are going on a picnic tomorrow, and I have got the food from the shop. What's the weather like then?

M: The forecast says it isn't bad. No rain but maybe a light wind.

W: Oh! It won't be good if things are blown away.

Text 6

M: Excuse me, I'm new here. Which bin is for empty plastic bottles? Is the green one?

W: Actually, the green bin is for food leftovers. Put your bottles in the blue one for recyclable waste.

M: Oh, thanks a lot.

Text 7

W: Is it true? I heard that the council is closing the cheese factory.

M: Yes, well, not exactly. It is only temporary. There was a problem with the machinery.

W: Oh, I'm surprised. I thought it was going to be shut down for good.

Text 8

M: You really have a lot of hobbies, Sarah. How do you find time to keep up with all of them?

W: That's the nice thing about being retired. I have always had a desire to do more in the field of art, and now that I have time,I really enjoy taking art classes at the community college.

Text 9

M: Put on your warm hat and gloves. It is cold here and gloves will protect your hands if you fall.

W: Falling is my only concern. I always slip on the ice. I hope you can help me.

Text 10

W: So, how's your French class going?

M: Not bad but I'm finding the pronunciation difficult.

W: Well, I improve my pronunciation by listening to language CDs, and sometimes I listen to French songs or watch French films.

M: That sounds good. But how do you learn new vocabulary?

W: I learn new words by writing them on pieces of paper and sticking them on things in my room. I look at them every night before I go to sleep.

M: Hmm. Maybe I should try something like that!

Text 11

W: Hi, Steven. Do you have any plans for the future?

M: Sure. I've decided to study hotel management at college after high school.

W: So you want to be a hotel manager, right?

M: Yes.How about you, Susan?

W: I want to be a Chinese teacher.

M: Why? Don't you think working as a teacher is a hard job?

W: Well, it's not as difficult as you think. And I think it's worth doing. Teachers can help students realize their dreams.

Text 12

W: You look exhausted, Mark. Are you still on that strict diet?

M: Yeah, but I'm always tired and easily annoyed. I thought I would feel great.

W: Well, extreme diets often have negative effects. Your body needs a variety of nutrients to function. Combine that with the stress from your new job and it's no wonder you feel this way.

M: I guess you are right. I've been skipping meals to work and then I am too tired to exercise.

W: Maybe focus on eating balanced meals at regular times first before you think about hitting the gym.

M: That sounds like a more sustainable approach. I'll start with seeking professional guidance and fixing my eating habits.

Text 13

M: Can you tell me some interesting activities in the library?

W: Yes. We offer a lot of activities and the most popular one is Story Time for children.

M: Isn't there a family movie night?

W: Yes. But it's not at night anymore. We used to have Family Movies on Fridays when the library was open until nine, but now we switch it to the weekend — Saturday afternoons.

M: How much do you charge for the movies?

W: They're all free. The movie starts at 2:30 in the Reference Room.

M: And what takes place on Friday evenings?

W: We've just started a weekly Lecture Series and the lectures cover all different kinds of topics.

M: That sounds like something I'd be interested in. When does it start?

W: The lecture starts at 6:30 in the Meeting Room. But you'd better come early, or there will be no seats left for you.

M: I got it. Thanks.

Text 14

W: I love the colors of autumn. Almost all the leaves turn orange, yellow and red.

M: Yes, I got a great photo yesterday. 150 people liked it and nearly 100 people shared it. Does that mean I'm famous on social media?

W: Unfortunately not. A recent study said you have to get 1,000 people to like your posts online for you to be considered a celebrity.

M: Oh well, only 850 away!

W: Is that mainly why you take pictures?

M: What? No, no, I just like to share them, so my friends and family can see them. If other people like them, that's a bonus.

W: Have you ever thought about doing it professionally?

M: No, but I have submitted some pictures to enter a competition and won.

W: That's amazing. You have a really good eye.

W:Chocolate is very popular in Britain. The British are one of the biggest consumers of chocolate. Apparently women buy more chocolate than men, but it doesn't mean they eat more because they give some away as a present. Men buy less chocolate, but normally eat it all themselves.

The popularity of chocolate is shown by the fact that there are chocolate societies, chocolate weekends and there are magazines just about chocolate in Britain. But what makes it so special?

Scientists proved that chocolate can make you feel physically good. It is sweet, light and absolutely delicious. But if you eat a lot of chocolate you may put on weight. And dentists say that it is not good for your teeth. So chocolate makes you feel good but you often feel bad about eating a lot of chocolate because you know or you think it is not good for you.
