The Sandwich
It is said that the name reportedly originated from(起源于) a fashionable gentlemen’s game club in London called "The Cocoa Tree", and more particularly could be accredited(认可) to a certain English aristocrat(贵族) and patron(赞助人) of the gentlemen’s club, Mr John Montague.
John Montague was a heavy gambler(赌徒). He didn’t want to stop for meals, so he put meat between two pieces of bread, presumably(大概) to prevent the playing cards from being spoiled by the Earl’s greasy(油腻的) fingers.
Because Montague also happened to be the Fourth Earl of Sandwich (a small coastal town in Southern England), others began to order " the same as Sandwich" and the name stuck.
From that day onwards(从那天起), the sandwich (as it is now known) has grown in popularity, particularly in Europe and America where the rise of an industrial society and the working classes made fast, portable, and inexpensive meals essential(基本的).
