Unit 11A

Text 1

M: Hi, can I order a plate of pancakes?

W: I'm sorry, sir. We are all out of pancakes. We always sell out by noon, but we do have eggs and toast.

Text 2

M: Hello, I want to go on holiday at the seaside this weekend. Can you make a reservation for me?

W: Yes, certainly. Just tell me your name and phone number.

Text 3

M: Mom, I'd like to learn how to play an instrument. What should I play?

W: Why don't you try the guitar? We can easily buy one for you. A piano would sound nice but is too expensive.

Text 4

M: What are you thinking right now, Lucy?

W: Can't you see? I'm thinking that if you were quiet, I could get my homework done. It is difficult for me to concentrate on it since you are always talking.

Text 5

W: Paul, your knee's bleeding!

M: I slipped on my way to the diving board.

W: I'll get a first aider here. One of your classmates can fetch your clothes from the changing room, and you can sit at the side.

Text 6

W: Henry, I heard you took a trip to China. So how was your time there?

M: Fascinating. We went to Beijing. It's a modern city with a long history. My parents were more interested in visiting the ancient buildings.

W: Did you go to Luoyang? It was an ancient capital of China.

M: No, it's a pity that we didn't have enough time. We visited Xi'an next because I'd been longing to travel there.

W: It must be amazing. I watched a documentary about it.

M: Indeed. We wandered around the old streets, the temples and city walls. All of them really gave us a sense of how magnificent ancient Chinese culture was. It was especially worthwhile to me. We also tasted the local snacks while appreciating some local activities there.

Text 7

W: Kevin, let's go to the beach!

M: The beach? I'm too lazy to move. Why don't we go another time, Betty?

W: There is some community work to be done there. We can collect a lot of plastic garbage.

M: What for? It's the government's responsibility. Why should we collect the plastic garbage?

W: Kevin, you don't know the harm the plastic does to the ocean. Plastic can pollute the ocean and, in turn, harm fish and other ocean life. We should care about what happens to the ocean. Didn't you hear that dead whale's stomach was full of plastic garbage?

M: Oh, yes. I heard about that. But what will we do with the plastic garbage we collect?

W: We will take all of the plastic to a recycling plant that can recycle it.

M: I see.Well, that's really a good idea.I think I'll join you.

Text 8

M: Hi, Susan. How are you? You don't look very happy.

W: It's my parents. They want me to go back to Thailand after I graduate.

M: Why don't you want to go back?

W: I want to pursue a career in computer engineering. I don't think I can do that in my home country.

M: Do you think you can easily land your first job here in the UK?

W: With many opportunities available, I believe it will be easier for me to build my career here.

M: What position do you actually want for your future career?

W: I want to work full-time as a research scientist specializing in computer engineering.

M: Awesome! Have you consulted the career advisor at the career center office?

W: No, not yet. It never crossed my mind. Will you go with me now?

M: Of course.

Text 9

M: Sara, how was the concert last night?

W: It was fine. But I didn't enjoy it because I had an argument with a person.

M: You? It's unbelievable that you could have an argument with anybody. What happened?

W: It was a woman, with her son, about 6 years old. They sat behind me and talked all the way through the concert. It was so annoying.

M: So you argued with them?

W: No. I just told them not to talk and they nodded. But a minute later, they began talking again. The boy even kicked my seat. I felt quite uncomfortable so I turned my head and stared at them.

M: And how did they react?

W: Guess what? The woman said I should be nice to kids! Then we started to argue. What would you have done?

M: Well, I wouldn't have argued with her. I would have asked the security guard to remove her.

W: Maybe you're right. Argument didn't make any sense, at least this time.

M: So don't be annoyed. I heard there's a new restaurant nearby. Let's give it a shot — my treat.

W: That's very kind of you.

Text 10

M: Next to me are my three assistants. On the left is Mary and on the right is Gladys. Between them is Daniel. Gladys is in charge of the computer lab and you should see her to reserve time for any of our computers. Daniel is the head of our reference department. He can help you find materials when you're investigating subjects or writing papers. Mary is in charge of keeping all the books and journals organized. This is an important job because if everything wasn't in its proper place, it would be impossible to find the information we need. We're open every day except Sundays and holidays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Sometimes we're open on special hours. For instance, during the family week when your parents are invited to visit the school, we're open every evening. If there are no questions, then Mary, Gladys and Daniel will show you around the facilities and explain everything to you.
