Unit 2A

Text 1

W: Did you see the film on Wednesday?

M: No, I went on Thursday night. Did you, on Wednesday?

W: I was going to watch it, but could not make it. I think I'll go on Saturday night.

Text 2

W: I will take your blood pressure and temperature.

M: Do I have a fever?

W: Just a slight one. Please wait a moment. The doctor will be with you shortly.

Text 3

M: I don't feel very good. I've got a burning feeling in my stomach.

W: Oh, poor Andy! Let's go to see a doctor immediately.

M: Maybe it will go away if I eat a hot dog.

W: No more junk food. Breakfast is ready in the kitchen. I'll get it for you soon.

Text 4

M: Katie, I waited for you for ages.

W: I left home in plenty of time, but then there was a car accident and the bus got stuck for ages. So I decided to get off and walk. Sorry! I should have taken the subway.

Text 5

W: My grandmother used to say, “Don't judge a book by its cover.”

M: What did she mean?

W: You shouldn't simply judge others by their looks. Take that athlete on TV for example. He looks smaller than others. I had guessed he'd lose, but he easily won the race.

Text 6

W: How was the football today, Charlie?

M: Good. We had a match with Swindon School. I scored.

W: Well done! Is Tom's leg better? Could he play today?

M: Yes. His leg is back to normal. He didn't score but he helped us add two of our other goals.

W: That's good!

M: Yes. Everyone thought he'd be quite slow as he hadn't played for quite a while, but he wasn't at all.

Text 7

W: Oh no! I don't have Amanda's phone number.

M: What's wrong, Miyako?

W: Amanda said we should get together again, and that I should call her, but I don't have her phone number.

M: I see. Well, don't worry about it. For Americans, that's usually a friendly way to say goodbye. It's like when Americans say “Hello, how are you?” But they don't want you to tell them how you are. It's just a friendly greeting.

W: So saying “Let's get together sometime.” is similar to that?

M: Yeah, that's right.

Text 8

M: Is there any place in the hotel for amusement?

W: You can go to the garden for jogging or bike-riding. It is very relaxing there. And a beautiful lake is being built and will be finished next year.

M: That sounds good. But is the garden the only place to go now?

W: No, sir. There is an amusement center on the ground floor. You can play golf and table tennis, and go bowling. The area is big enough for 5 people to play games.

M: Is there a place where we can listen to some music?

W: Yes, sir. There is a teahouse. You can enjoy both classical music and modern music, while having some Chinese tea or other drinks.

M: Oh, great. Thank you very much.

W: It's my pleasure.

Text 9

W: We will both start our new jobs next month, and we have to look for an apartment.

M: Hey, darling. I hadn't realized it was so close already. What kind of place would you like?

W: It should be near the bus stop or a subway station.

M: What about the size?

W: Well, a two-bedroom place is enough for us and our baby.

M: It won't be expensive. What kind of price do you think we can afford?

W: Oh, about six hundred dollars. It doesn't have to be equipped with furniture. We have our own furniture. The apartment should not be in the city center. I like quietness.

M: Yeah, I agree. I'd like the apartment to be near a park, so we can go running outdoors as usual.

W: Well, we can look for the information on the Internet or call Lily. She knows a lot about houses.

M: I prefer the newspaper. We can take a look in the For Rent section.

W: Good idea. Let's hope we can find something good!

Text 10

M: Hi, I'm Rick Steves. If you've been with us from the beginning, you'll know that we began our tour in Amsterdam, walked our way through Germany and Austria, down into Italy, back up through Switzerland and this week we are in Paris. We won't spend much time at the big attractions. In a tourist destination like Paris, even a new traveler knows to see the famous art museums of Paris and no one misses the Eiffel Tower. But we're going to some of the places the average tourists miss. For instance, the best view in town may not be from the top of the Eiffel Tower, but from the top of the Montparnasse Tower. The view includes the Eiffel Tower as well as everything else. It's cheaper and easier to get up here. We can join a ride on a public bus. You will like the views from Line 63. Or we can cruise through Paris in one of their river tour boats. To cover more territory, traffic and streets for you, we ride the subway. Many European cities have subway systems. The one in Paris is really amazing. You can go anywhere in town for a reasonable price. And getting lost is cheap. In fact, you could stay underground all day long on one ticket at a cost of a cup of coffee.
