Text 1
W: What are you doing this Saturday night? Lisa invited me to her party and said I could bring a friend.
M: I am going to see a movie with Mike that night. I'm free on Sunday.
Text 2
W: Good morning, Dr. Cruz.
M: Hello, Mrs. Moore. Who's your visitor?
W: Oh, this is my daughter Heather. She's a writer, and her husband is a teacher.
Text 3
W: I've never seen you in that shirt before. It looks fashionable.
M: Oh, I've had it for 2 years, but I don't wear it very often — it's a little tight.
W: The color suits you, though.
Text 4
W: Tom, I want to talk with you right now.
M: What's up?
W: You promised to hand in perfect homework, but it is full of mistakes.
Text 5
M: Let's meet at 7:30 p.m. outside the cinema.
W: I think we should go there earlier.
M: There are some advertisements before the movie starts, so 7:30 p.m. is a good time.
Text 6
M: Mum, do you remember you promised I could invite some friends for a picnic on Saturday?
W: Yes, of course. I've already done all the shopping for it. I've got burgers and sausages. And I've bought lots of salads, too.
M: Do you remember we wanted to have some pies as well?
W: I didn't buy any but I think we have some in the fridge. I'll just have a look. Hmm, well, we've got one pie, but I think I'd better get some more. I'll go to the supermarket tomorrow.
M: Thanks, Mum.
Text 7
M: How many people are there in your country?
W: About 30 million and most of them live in the north.
M: What's the average income?
W: That's really hard to say. I think most people earn about two thousand dollars a month, if you change the money from our currency into dollars.
M: So your country is fairly rich.
W: I think we are richer in a way, but our biggest problem presently is unemployment, which is about 8%. It has doubled over the last four years.
M: Unemployment in my country is a smaller percentage.
Text 8
W: Hi, cousin. I haven't seen you since the last year's family gathering. What's new?
M: Well, most recently I started taking some online classes.
W: You're studying more? Haven't you learned enough?
M: No, never. After I finished my finance classes, I thought I should challenge myself with computer programming. So, I'm learning that now in my free time. There's a lot to read.
W: How do you read? Do you prefer printed books or e-books?
M: Most of my books are electronic books. They're cheaper, and of course, I can take them anywhere.
W: Don't your eyes get tired from looking at the screen so much? People say electronic books are more convenient because they don't take up any more space. But I just like the feel of turning pages and the experience of a real book.
M: What have you been reading lately?
W: Medical theory and history. I am training to become a nurse. I have a lot to read. It is really tiring, but I don't mind.
Text 9
W: Hello, this is TV-MK Studios. May I help you?
M: Hello, I'm Roy! I'm calling because I saw an ad in the school newspaper. It says there is some work available for a student who wants to work on your local news program.
W: Right. But do you know the student we want for the job is a volunteer? It's an unpaid job.
M: Oh, sure. I know that. I just want to gain some work experience.
W: Are you available on weekends? We are extremely busy at that time and need a hand.
M: Of course. I am free on weekends and I have no classes on Wednesday and Friday.
W: That's great! Well, do you major in media studies?
M: No, journalism. But I've taken some media studies and advertising courses.
W: I see. First you need to fill in an application form. Could you come here later this afternoon?
M: Of course.
W: That's great. Then you have to talk with Mr. Smith. He is in charge of the program.
M: I know, and actually I can't wait to see him.
W: Wish you good luck!
Text 10
M: Are you ready for some new adventures? I hope you guys didn't eat too much for dinner because tonight we're going to a dance studio and you may want to try some dancing. Like doing sports, you need to warm up and stretch before you dance. This will keep you from hurting yourselves. Once you are warmed up, you're ready for some dancing. What kind of dance do you want to do? How about ballet? Ballet is a beautiful kind of dance, but it can be very difficult. If you want to be a good ballet dancer, you need to be very flexible. If ballet is too difficult for you, you could try jazz dance. Jazz dance is more relaxing than ballet. In ballet, you must hold your body in certain ways. With jazz dance, you can be a little freer. If you don't like jazz dance or ballet, you can try hip-hop dance. Hip-hop dance is the most popular kind of dance. In hip-hop dance, dancers have more choices of moves. Hip-hop dance combines different dance steps. Sometimes hip-hop dancers even use jazz steps or ballet steps in their dances. Dancing is a lot of fun. Visit a dance studio if you can and try some dancing!
