Unit 4B

Text 1

M: Can I leave now?

W: Sure, Jim. But remember to pay more attention to your work, or you won't pass the final exams.

Text 2

W: Hello, Mike. Where is my dictionary now?

M: The day before yesterday Mary took it from me, but yesterday afternoon I saw it in Paul's room and I took it back.

Text 3

W: You are late! You should have come earlier to see the wonderful beginning of the film.

M: Well, I met my brother at the airport and we bought something on the way back.

Text 4

M: Will Dr. Jones be able to see me at 11:00, please?

W: Sorry, she's fully booked up till 3:00 pm. How about 3:30 pm?

M: It's OK for me.

Text 5

M: What exactly are you looking for?

W: I am looking for a collection of the 19th century European paintings.

M: Is it the book on your left, the one with the yellow cover?

W: Let me see. Yeah, this is what I want. Thanks a lot.

Text 6

M: Sally, do you like seafood?

W: Yes, of course.

M: Is there anything you especially like?

W: Well, I really don't know. I can never remember the name.

M: OK. Is there any food you don't eat?

W: Well, I don't eat chicken, and I don't like eggs, either. But I like all kinds of vegetables.

M: Then, let's look at the menu, and see what they've got for us.

Text 7

W: Excuse me. Do you sell office equipment here?

M: Yes. We have all kinds of office desks, chairs, computers and other equipment.

W: Well, I'd like to buy some computers for my company.

M: Certainly. We have a variety of computers on sale here.

W: Well, if I place an order now, how soon could you deliver them?

M: Well, we cannot give you an exact date, but we promise to deliver them as soon as possible.

W: Good. I'll buy ten computers then. So, I am wondering if I could get 15% off.

M: Well, we usually only offer 12%. But we'd be happy to give you 15% off since you buy ten.

Text 8

M: Are you going to be home at 3:00 pm today, or are you staying late at work?

W: I'm not staying late, but I am going to stop by the grocery store to get some fruit on my way home. Why?

M: I have something being delivered, and I want to make sure someone is there to receive it around 5:00 pm.

W: Oh, okay. I can be home by 5:00 pm, but the kids will both be home from soccer practice by then. One of them could sign for it.

M: No, they can't, because it is a box of wine.

W: Well, I think they are old enough to sign for alcohol.

M: The delivery person will need to see identification to make sure the person signing is over 21 years old. Our kids are not old enough yet.

W: Fine. I will hurry home before the wine arrives.

Text 9

W: Excuse me. I'm doing research on bus service. Could I get you to answer a few questions? It won't take long.

M: OK. I'd like to help.

W: Thanks. How often do you take a bus, every day, once a week or somewhere in between?

M: I go to school by bus. So it's usually twice daily, Line Four.

W: I see. Could you rate its service? If 1 is poor, 2 is fair, and 3 is good, which number would you choose?

M: I would say 2. The drivers are nice. The buses are clean and the seats are comfortable, but it's sometimes unreliable. There should be a bus every ten minutes. But yesterday morning I waited almost twenty minutes before the bus came and was almost late for school.

W: Oh, that's too bad. Do you have some suggestions for the bus company?

M: Try to have the buses arrive on time, of course, and um, there can be a map on the bus. You know some passengers cannot use the guidebook very well.

W: Thank you very much for your help.

M: You are welcome.

Text 10

W: Hi, I'd like to tell you an interesting experience. It happened two years ago. A man named Charles Fagin from a Hollywood film studio came to me and said my house looked perfect for a film he was working on. He asked me if I'd be interested in renting it out for a few weeks. The money he offered was attractive, but there was one more thing. They'd dig up my lovely garden. I was a little hesitant. But finally I agreed. Fagin told me they'd paint some rooms, but he promised they'd repaint them after the shoot, and they'd fix anything they damaged. Preparation for the house began a month before the film shoot. The crew painted the living room gray. They brought in a larger sofa and dug holes in the ceiling for the lights. For the film shoot, which took place over four days, I agreed to be out of my house, staying with my relatives. Fortunately for me, the shoot went well. The scenic painters attempted to repaint my living room before they left. But I disliked the terrible way they repainted it, so I ended up painting my living room again myself.
