Text 1

W: Are you enjoying that book about the athlete?

M: Yes. I think I like it very much. I first read the book from a friend. I immediately decided to get one from a store the second day.

Text 2

M: Kate, what were you doing when the car accident happened?

W: I was having lunch with my friends Kevin and Mike. Mike saw it and called the police at once.

Text 3

W: Tim, I want to apologize for taking your dictionary without asking.

M: Well, Helen, I should say sorry too. I put you in a difficult position, asking for my dictionary in public.

Text 4

W: Don't be angry with them. After all, they are still children.

M: But I am still worried about them. I'm afraid…

W: We should encourage our children to do what they like, so long as they are on track. So calm down. Let's have our supper.

Text 5

W: I know you once worked for a private company as a marketing director. So why did you decide to leave your former post?

M: Though I got on well with my colleagues and I had got good pay, there was a ceiling on my further promotion. I need a bigger stage.

Text 6

W: I'm calling to confirm my flight to New York this Saturday. My name is Jane Austin, and my flight number is K701.

M: Yes, Ms. Austin. Your name is here on our computer. Your plane takes off at 9:00 am. And please come to the airport two hours before your take-off time to get your seating arrangements.

W: Could you tell me once again how long my flight will be?

M: The total number of hours is 16 because you have a two-hour stopover at Los Angeles International Airport.

W: Thank you.

Text 7

W: Ben, did you see the program last night about the Olympic Games? It was brilliant. I learnt so much!

M: Did you? I thought it was quite boring. In fact, I'm not really interested in sports programs.

W: But you love sports. You play football and tennis and basketball and…

M: Yes, I enjoy playing sports, but I hate watching them on TV.

W: Oh, so what kind of TV program do you like?

M: To be honest, I don't watch much TV. I prefer watching movies on my notebook computer.

Text 8

W: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?

M: I'd like to check out. My name is Neil Green. I stayed in Room 124.

W: Just a moment, please.

M: OK.

W: Sorry to have kept you waiting. Here's your bill. The total is 950 yuan.

M: 950 yuan! Is there a mistake?

W: Please check the bill carefully and see if there's any mistake.

M: Of course. The room is 150 yuan per day and I stayed for 3 days. The car is rented by the day. The charge is 200 yuan per day. I used it for 2 days. I just drove to the shopping mall and the beach.

W: In any case, you're expected to pay for extra hours and miles. I understand that you rented the car by the day, but last night you went to a concert, which means an extra charge of 100 yuan.

M: Your car charge is much higher than I imagined.

Text 9

M: What's wrong, Kathy? You look disappointed.

W: I didn't get into the course I wanted to, which means I have to take it next term.

M: I remember you saying you wanted to get into psychology. Was that it?

W: No, it was ecology. I'm in psychology now. Apparently, it is recommended to take them at the same time.

M: One term is not a long time. What's the big deal?

W: I'm taking four classes next term, and one of them is criminal behavior, which is really hard. I don't know how I'm going to manage another one, but I'll have to.

M: If so, you are taking two more than me. You are going to be so busy.

W: I know! Anyway, enough about me. How are your classes going?

M: Tough. In order to get my engineering certificate, I have to take all these advanced math classes. My professor isn't very nice, either.

W: I've been lucky with my professors. We have interesting lectures, and I can tell they love what they're doing. I hope one day I will be someone like them.

Text 10

M: OK, so the Mini Olympic Games. Parents make sure your kids don't miss the opportunity to shine! The Games are on July the sixteenth, which is now only fourteen days away, and the last day your children can enter is the tenth. Just pay £10, and you'll make a valuable contribution to our three aims. Firstly, we want to raise as much money as we can for medical research at the Children's Health Center. Secondly, we hope to raise money to build a new library, next to the swimming pool. Last but not least, we want to encourage children to take part in sports.

On the day itself, please get here with your children any time after 9:30 and no later than 10:00, as events begin at 10:15 and they last until 3:30. There's a wide range of events. Interest is likely to be the greatest in the football match, with volleyball coming a close second. We've had plenty of participants for the long jump, but not enough for the high jump. And we don't want to cancel that, so please see if you can persuade your kids to go for that. Thank you.
