Text 1

M: I thought I heard someone knocking at the door.

W: Just the delivery boy with a package for our neighbor. She and her husband are visiting their daughter in Canada, so I'll keep it until they get back.

Text 2

W: Is this the one you took on holiday, Michael?

M: Yes. Here I am with my wife and the two children. The weather wasn't so good that day, unfortunately. You can see our hotel in the background.

Text 3

W: I am sorry to hear that Bill was fired. I know he was sick a lot and that he usually went to work late.

M: Oh, it wasn't that. Bill made a big error in last month's accounts.

W: Oh, that's too bad.

Text 4

W: There was no one else on the road, and that's why I felt it was safe to drive a little faster.

M: That's not the point. You still went over the speed limit, and for that, I must give you a ticket.

Text 5

M: I find there are plenty of classical music CDs on the Internet. You can buy them very cheaply if you like them.

W: Great! I know you very often listen to them. You can try some rock music, which can make you energetic and powerful. And jazz music also makes people feel relaxed.

M: Mm… I sometimes listen to them.

Text 6

M: Hi, I'm calling about the ad in the paper. Is the computer still for sale?

W: Yes, it is. Are you interested?

M: I searched for the product online and I know the asking price. I was just hoping you could come down a bit in price.

W: Well, how about this? I have a few other things for sale. If you buy more than one thing, I'll give you a better price.

M: What do you have?

W: I've also got a washing machine, a sofa, and a TV for sale.

M: Hmm. The TV sounds interesting. Does it work well?

W: Yes. The only reason we're getting rid of it is that we won a new one from a radio station last month.

M: Would it be all right if I came over to look at it?

W: Sure.

Text 7

M: Can I borrow the car today, Mom? I was thinking about going out to look for a job.

W: Good for you! That's a very responsible thing to do. What made you decide to do this?

M: There is a cool new laptop I want to buy.

W: Well, I guess you'd better get a job! Do you know where you should go?

M: Yeah, I'm going to the mall. There are a few stores that are hiring.

W: Good. You should put on some nicer clothes and wear your new shoes. You want to make a good impression. Do you have a resume?

M: Yes, I made my resume as soon as I decided to get a job.

W: Well done! But don't forget to print your resume. They may ask you to show your resume.

Text 8

W: Were you born here in New York City, Ted?

M: No. I was born and raised in Bridgetown. When I was in high school, my mother moved to Chicago for work and then to New York City.

W: Why did you come to New York City? To live with your mother?

M: No. Actually my mother always wanted me and my two sisters to go to college in the U.S., so when it was time for me to go to college, she asked me to come to the U.S.

W: Did your sisters come to the U.S. before or after you?

M: I am the youngest of the three of us, so I was the last one to come here.

W: Was it difficult for you to leave your home?

M: No, not really. I'd always really looked forward to coming to the U.S., so I didn't feel sad at all to leave my home country.

W: Do many people in your country leave home for the U.S.?

M: Yes. It's typical of us to go to the United Kingdom or to the U.S. for our education.

Text 9

W: Hello, Four Seasons Hotel. May I help you?

M: Yes. I'd like to book a room.

W: OK, sir. For which days and how many guests?

M: From April 16th to 18th. Just my wife and me.

W: We have single rooms, double rooms, and business rooms. And what kind of room would you prefer, sir?

M: A double room, please.

W: I'll check on that… Sir, we have two double rooms available. One is with a beautiful sea view for 120 dollars a night and the other one is smaller for only 100 dollars. Which one do you like?

M: OK. I'll take the smaller one.

W: Thank you, sir. May I have your name and phone number, or your email address if you like?

M: My name is Aaron Johnson and my phone number is 324-5827.

W: Mr. Johnson, may I know what time you'll check in on April 16th?

M: Around 9:00 p.m. You can only keep the room for me until 10:00 p.m. Our plane will land at 7:00 p.m. We'll have enough time to get to your hotel.

W: OK.

Text 10

M: My name is Jake, and I recently went on a diving trip with my family — swimming under the water. It was very exciting. I'd never gone diving in open water before, like a river or a lake. And I had always been expecting a real sea dive. I'd just done my diving training in a pool. I was really looking forward to my first real sea dive. We couldn't decide where to go at first. We considered going somewhere in Indonesia or in Australia, but then friends in Singapore offered to let us stay with them. We went to the coast there, where there were perfect diving conditions.

I was a bit worried as we were swimming around because we'd heard there might be sharks in the area — only small ones! So I was very scared when some big sea animals came swimming toward us — but they turned out to be whales! They played with us in the water. We even managed to get some photos. We hoped we'd see some flying fish — but no such luck. Each day's dives were completely different. We did three dives on the first day, and four on the second, plus a few more on the third — twelve dives altogether! It was the best trip ever.
