Text 1
W: How do you like the film?
M: I really like comedies and I laughed my head off for most of the film.
W: But it seems to run out of ideas at the end, and the ending is really disappointing.
Text 2
W: It's so quiet up here. And look at all those stars!
M: I know. This is why I like coming up here. It's nice to get out of the city once in a while, and I must admit that I love sleeping outdoors like this.
Text 3
M: How many literature courses have you taken at the university?
W: I've taken only one course in British and American Literature. I wish I had taken more, especially in other languages.
Text 4
M: Where are you working now, Jennifer? Still in the hospital?
W: No, I left the hospital and I refused the job at the drugstore. I'm working as a teacher in a medical college now.
Text 5
M: Excuse me. I would like to meet the manager.
W: He is not in the office. Do you have an appointment?
M: No. I am here to thank him for getting my phone back. I really appreciate it.
Text 6
W: So what did you do last weekend?
M: Oh, I had a relaxing time. I went to a club and sang with some friends there on Saturday.
W: How fun! Did you go to Lucky's?
M: No, we didn't. We went to a new place downtown. How about you? Did you go anywhere?
W: No, I didn't go anywhere all weekend. I just stayed home and studied for today's Spanish test.
M: Our test is today? I forgot about it! I should have prepared for it.
W: Don't worry. You always get an A.
Text 7
W: How did you find this place? Online?
M: No, I saw an advertisement in the newspaper for a room in a shared house.
W: What is it like living here?
M: Well, it's good for me because it's quite cheap.
W: You don't have anyone living right above you, so it isn't as noisy as my apartment.
M: Yeah. My flatmates are away working quite a lot, so it's just like living on my own a lot of the time.
W: That's great!
M: But weekends are different. Nobody ever wants to do any housework. So the house is in an awful mess. That's why I want to move out.
Text 8
W: You work in the restaurant business, don't you?
M: Not exactly. We provide food for lots of restaurants, but it's really annoying at the moment.
W: Oh dear! What's the problem?
M: Well, there's just too much to do. It's my dad's business, but he's getting old now. My uncle works with us too, but he's not really interested. So it's all up to me. I can't keep track of what's coming and going out.
W: Sounds like you need a better business management system!
M: Yeah! That's exactly what I was thinking. How do you know that?
W: That's my job. I set up computerized business management systems.
M: Wow! That's brilliant! Could you develop a system for me?
W: Yeah! If I have time.
M: Thank you. I'll pay you for the system.
Text 9
M: It's already Tuesday night and I have an interview the day after tomorrow. Will you please get my suit and shirt ready?
W: Which shirt do you want, the white one with black buttons, or the blue one with white buttons?
M: Well, I think I'm going to wear my gray suit. So, the blue one is better.
W: Fine. Should I take it to the dry cleaner's?
M: It isn't dirty. It is only wrinkled. It only needs to be ironed.
W: OK. I'll steam and iron it.
M: But we don't have a clothes steamer anymore, remember? My brother used it last Saturday while he was visiting. Then he took it home with him.
W: I remember. I'll use another method to steam your clothes.
M: What's that?
W: I'll hang them up in the bathroom while I take a hot shower. That should take out most of the wrinkles. After that, I'll iron it.
M: That's a great idea!
W: Did you finish studying the interview questions?
M: Yes. But I still need to read through the company's literature, too. I should be very familiar with the department I want to get into.
W: But you don't have much time left.
M: I know. Wish me luck.
W: Good luck! You'll get it all done, and they'll certainly hire you.
Text 10
M: As a young child, I always enjoyed physical challenges more than mental ones. I liked to run. At that stage I hadn't yet learned to climb or swim, but those are things I would also have loved to do. One day we had a physical education class at school. We did the long jump and handstands, but it was when I had to do a forward roll that disaster struck. Somehow, I twisted my neck in an extremely painful way. I screamed loudly and the teachers were very concerned. An ambulance was called and I was taken to hospital. The doctors fitted me up with a collar and I was told to do no exercise and stay away from school for eight weeks. At first, I was very bored. Having to keep still all day was not fun.So I started to read. I looked at books on the shelf at home. I wasn't interested in love stories — I avoided those — but crime and adventure stories did appeal. In those eight weeks I developed a lifelong love for reading. When my collar was removed, the doctors told me not to exercise for another four weeks. Instead of being disappointed, I was happy to devote more time to my new love — reading.
