Text 1
M: Good morning. Is there anything you would like to have?
W: Do you serve drinks?
M: Yes, we have cola, orange juice, green tea, and coffee. Which one do you prefer?
W: A bottle of orange juice, please.
Text 2
W: Hi, Tom.
M: Hi, Lucy. The kids are going to barbecue this afternoon. Is the weather going to be kind to them?
W: OK. Let me see. After last night’s storms, it’s a little bit cloudy this morning. However, it will be sunny this afternoon.?
Text 3
M: Oh, hi, Laura. What are you doing here?
W: Er, I’m buying a bicycle for my bicycle race next weekend. What about you?
M: Well, I’m here looking for a bike too. Now the weather is warming up. I thought I’d get some exercise instead of taking the bus all the time.
Text 4
W: Could you do me a favor?
M: Sure, what is it?
W: I’m going to be away for a week. I need someone to water my plants.
M: Sure, no problem.
Text 5
W: Excuse me, please show me your ticket and identity card.
M: I have no ticket. I just want to see my daughter off.
W: Sorry, sir, the person who has no ticket is not allowed to get into the platform.
M: OK, I will not be in.
W: Thank you for your cooperation.
Text 6
M: Are you going abroad over the summer holidays?
W: Yes, I’m going to Sydney. Where are you going?
M: I’m flying to Hawaii.
W: Are you traveling by yourself?
M: Yes, but I’m going to meet my parents in Hawaii.
W: I’m flying alone too, but I’m going to stay with a host family during my stay in Sydney. I’ll meet them at the airport.
Text 7
W: So, how did it go?
M: Better than I had expected.
W: Didn’t I tell you that you were fitter for the job than others?
M: My education is OK. But I don’t have the experience of working on a project like this. My knowledge is mostly in theory. That is why I am not so sure about getting this job.
W: I think what matters is that you have the ability to use your knowledge in your work.
M: I hope my interviewers feel that way.
Text 8
M: Did you see the list of books for this course?
W: Yes, Dr. Downs said he expected us to have the first five on the list. He is going to discuss them in detail.
M: Are you going to buy them?
W: I don’t know. These books are expensive. And I don’t have a lot of money with me.
M: How about sharing them with me?
W: Sounds good.
M: Let’s do this. I will buy three and you buy two of them.
W: I would rather do it this way: We share the cost of the books fifty-fifty now. And at the end of the course you can take the books you find interesting and I will take the ones I like.
M: What if we both like the same books?
W: Come on! We are not going to argue over that, are we?
M: I was just joking. It’s indeed a better idea.
W: Then let’s get the books as soon as possible.
Text 9
M: Good morning, Lucy. Can I help you?
W: Good morning, sir. I’d like to talk with you about my studies for a minute.
M: Certainly, come in and have a seat.
W: Thank you. I have a record of my studies from last year. Would you like to see it?
M: Yes, let me see now. You are studying mathematics, aren’t you?
W: Yes, I am. But I’d like to apply for admission to the engineering college next year.
M: I see. Have you asked your parents for their advice about this?
W: Yes, I have. They think it is a good idea.
M: Well, your record here has been very good. I don’t think you will have much trouble.
W: I hope not. Anyway, I am going to apply for it. And I’d like to ask you to write a letter to recommend me, if it is not too much trouble.
M: No trouble at all. I’d be glad to do it. Is there anything else?
W: No, sir, I think that is all. Thank you very much.

Hello, everyone. My name’s Karl Roberts, and I’ll be your teacher for this course — Intercultural Communication.
To begin with, please look at the timetable in front of you. You should all have one by now, I think. We have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:20 pm to 3:50 pm. We will be meeting in this lecture room for the first half of the course, but we will be using the research lab every other week from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm on Thursdays in Room 307 during the last two months of the course.
Uh, this is the textbook for the course, Beyond Language. Unfortunately, the books haven’t come in yet, but you will be able to buy them at the bookstore the day after tomorrow.
My office hours are from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm on Wednesdays, and you can set up an appointment to meet with me at other times as well. Okay, let me explain a little bit more about the course.
