Unit 1A

Text 1

W: What lovely weather! I can finally climb the Great Wall. There's been a lot of rainfall this summer. I thought it was always so rainy in Beijing.

M: Actually the climate in Beijing is rather dry in summer.

Text 2

M: Wow, so many choices, and so many people. So, what kind of film do you want to see?

W: It's up to you. But nothing too violent, please.

Text 3

W: Are you going to the beach during your holiday this year?

M: Lying around and doing nothing is very boring. I'm going to spend two nights by the lake and sit around a campfire this year.

Text 4

W: How much time do we have before the meeting? We don't have to hurry, do we?

M: Don't worry. It's 7:30 now. We still have an hour and a half. It takes only thirty minutes to get there.

Text 5

M: Wow, I didn't know you paint. I wish I developed a hobby.

W: It's never too late to develop hobbies. There are a variety of classes at the local community college. You could look into them.

Text 6

M: OK, take it and carefully pour it into the bottle. You must be very careful, or it may burn a hole in the table.

W: Isn't this a bit risky, sir? My dad is also a teacher and he says science can be dangerous.

M: Not if we take care and do it correctly. Now, once you have poured all of it in, wait for it to react.

W: That's strange — there's a lot of smoke coming out of the bottle!

M: Don't worry. That's supposed to happen. Just keep watching with your teammates. What else do you notice?

W: The color is changing! I love science!

Text 7

W: Carl, what is your favorite way to get new information, TV, radio or newspapers?

M: None of them. I tend to use the microblog.

W: I used to use this kind of media, but I find it difficult to get the right information and sometimes it is of poor quality.

M: I think I can get up-to-date information easily on it. So how do you get recent news now?

W: I get recent news by watching TV, which usually spreads positive energy and is a suitable approach to getting real information.

M: This kind of traditional media is totally out of date. With the rapid development of technology, you are unlikely to get the most recent news through it. There isn't enough news on TV, either.

W: Everyone has their own ideas, so you can't force me to give up what I like.

Text 8

W: Welcome to Our Figure Today. This is Julia Ann. Today we will meet Mr. Dowis, author of a best-seller Flower Chaser.

M: Good morning, all the audience. Good morning, Julia.

W: Good morning, Mr. Dowis. What's your job at first?

M: I worked as a photographer.

W: When did it occur to you to write a book about flowers?

M: Five years ago, I took photos for a gardening website. That's when I came to truly appreciate the beauty of flowers and I began to take photos of them whenever I found one.

W: Do you mean the photos were taken at random?

M: At first they were. Later I started journeys to different states, looking for flowers and recording them with my camera. I became a flower lover. That's when the idea of having a book published came to my mind.

W: I saw readers' responses. They like the flowers you recorded, the stories you told and most importantly your attitude towards nature.

Text 9

M: What is the new comedy you recommend?

W: It stars the comedian Susan Phillips. She talks about all kinds of topics including politics and history, but the funniest moments are when she talks about being a mom.

M: Oh yes. She has funny observations of everyday life. I also really like her jokes about how badly her kids behave.

W: I know how she feels since I have 2 little boys of my own.

M: I hope your kids don't cause that much trouble.

W: Actually, my boys can be naughty as well. I should start my own comedy show about their behaviors.

M: Ha ha. How old are your children now?

W: The older one, Daniel, has just had his 8th birthday. Kevin is two years younger.

M: Wow, they're growing up fast.

W: Yes. How time flies. Daniel already wants to become an astronaut. He needs to work harder at school.

M: If it doesn't work out, maybe he can be a famous comedian!

Text 10

M: I'm Richard Hunter. You may recognize my face from an article in a local paper. This is mainly about my so-called Boot Camp. As the name suggests, this consists of some quite difficult exercises, designed to make a man of you! That's a joke. Most of my customers are women. I do mostly morning training in villages, and I advertise in local primary schools. I find that's the best way of reaching the younger mothers. The training is always carried out outdoors, in all weathers. I'm very much into showing that you don't need gym equipment or heavy weights. So I like to use real things which you can find around your house or garden.

My business is still at the developing stage, and the same goes for my website. At the moment, it's just advertising what I do. It has also got some pages of advice about training. The long-term diet is next on my list for the website, although I haven't started that yet. Within six months, I hope to have some videos of people showing some training methods. I'm also planning to organize some sports camps for young children in the summer holidays and I'm looking for some helpers. So if anybody is interested…
